Can any body give me a pointer as to the best hop straining method

I have just done my first ever brew (an All Grain no less  ) and it went really well except i have got hops in my FV that I wasn't expecting.

I used a copper pipe manifold half sawn the same as my tun (which worked brilliant) but it only stopped the bulk. Will they settle down in the FV cos they are bouncing around alllover the FV at the moment.

Piccies and write up of first AG will be posted soon!

Congratulations on getting you first brew done.
The general rule of thumb is slots for grain and holes for hops.a lot of people use sieves when draining the wort from the boiler into the FV.

cheers for quick replies and link, think I like the shiny mesh. :thumb:

When hops are added to FV is a similar strainer used in FV :?:

If your adding hops to the Fv most people place them in a muslin bag for ease of removing them.

Edited by Tubby for spelling  wrong one!! it was 50/50!

Did you recirculate the bitter wort ?
The hop strainer itself doesn't do the filtering, it is just a base for the hops to form around so that they can filter out themselves and any trub :thumb:
If you recirculate the wort until it runs clear and then run off of slowly you shouldn't get much in the way of detritus in the FV ;)

No  I did it for the mash for about the first 8litres until it ran clear, should have done the same with the wort.

Still like the shiny mesh though

The shiny mesh is good :thumb: but even with that in place recirculation is still necessary :)

Oh forget Tubby it was your Pale Protector (recipe 20) that I popped my cherry with

I went for 35g of both hops instead of 25g and it all went really well, nice straight forward recipe :thumb:
