Hi all
in my last brew I added 200g of hops at one stage or another. At the end of the boil I had only 21 instead of 23 ltrs of wort. This has never happened before and from looking at the hops left in the boiler, it seemed that they had stolen it.

Theiving little $£&%ards

So... we all know that you shouldn't squeeze grain, but does anyone ever squeeze out their hops at the end of the boil?

I have found that if you calculate 15ml of lost wort per 1g of hops in your boil and adjust your liquid up accordingly then you will be pretty much spot on.

I don't think that it would hurt to squeeze the hops to get out a bit more wort - but you may end up with more astringency in the finished beer.

I've always got my ltr/grain spot on before which is why this one puzzled me :hmm:

Yes.... that's what I was thinking, will I get off-flavours in the same way that would happen with squeezed grain?

Tony you can either do what adm is correctly suggesting, or you can do what I and a few others do and gently sparge the hops at the end to release the trapped extract ;)
Squeezing the hops is not a good idea, if for no other reason than it will add the trub that has been filtered out, through into the fv.

Ahh .... sparging the hops... now why didn't I think of that?

Many thanks TS & adm!
