Hop Spider Thingy

Hi all

Some help / advice needed.

I bought one of these things a few weeks ago. It's one of the ones that you place inside a corny to dry hop etc. But the thing came from China and was in rather flimsy packaging. Needless to say, it is damaged. Not massively but damaged. If I use hop pellets, stuff will escape. Is there any way to seal this up safely? I was going to use it tonight and place the hop pellets inside one of those tiny hop bags and then into the spider. But I would prefere to just use it the way it is supposed to be used.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi mate, I'm sure they only glue them but obviously it needs to withstand the heat and be waterproof, have you looked on youtube to see if there are any build Vlogs? it may tell you what they seal them with, sorry I couldn't help any further

I was thinking of using glue but didn't know what type to use or if it would contaminate the beer. I have some of that Gorilla Glue which is good stuff but again, would it contaminate?

They must use a special glue as they all overlap, I've just bought a Mangrove Jack one and hoping to use it tomorrow for my first brew in the all in one Brewster Beacon.

Id be tempted to run a bead of silicone sealant over the seam.
Takes 24 hours to cure though.

Whacky idea but if I put a little beeswax in between the join and pressed it closed, would that work? Beeswax is inert so I don't think it would contaminate the beer but I wonder if the hole would remain closed once submerged.

Do you wish to use it as a hop spider in the boil, or to dry hop during fermentation?
Pellet hops will swell in both cases, and dry hopping in the corny keg, won't you have to leave it in all the time - with the risk of having a 'grassy' taste after a week or so as the max dry hop time is about 7 days. (I'm assuming that you intend to dry hop as you drink the beer}
Perhaps you could try sewing up the damage with some thin copper wire or fishing line that should prevent the rent from splitting.

So it isn't advisable to dry hop for more than 7 days then? Well that kind of makes my mind up then. I was just going to bung it in and leave it there whilst I drank the keg.

Lead in the solder might dissolve because of the slight acidity of the beer. Don't know if solder is lead-free these days.

Some of the stuff I buy on Amazon comes from China and it is often poorly packed. I have no compunction in asking for a refund and return to which they invariably ask for a photo. Photo received, refund follows with a request that I dispose of the item myself as it would be too costly to return. My point being, if you ordered it on Amazon or the like, go through the motions and when you've got your money back order another one- which might arrive safely. Use the old one in the meantime- it looks as if the amount of detritus that might escape would be minimal anyway.

Did all that. Sent the photos etc. I was due a partial refund but I am still waiting for it.

You should be fine then. Doesn't take 7 days to drink a keg!
