Hi all,

I have never used hop pellets except in a teabag or muslin bag for dry hopping but there seems to be a move over to pellets in more varieties from some of the Homebrew suppliers. I normally boil leaf hops in a muslin bag and let the chips fall where they may it does work ok for me. Could I use pellets in the same way or would I need to adjust my technique.

If I don't get back with thanks for answers quickly I apologise I now work 12 hour shifts and am "on" till Monday night. (Tuesday is Brew Day though)

Cheers all

Andrew

Use them the same, you will probably find you lose less wort than with leaf, they are also supposedly a little more efficient.. all things being the same I prefer them

Have you got some sort of hop filter?
Even so I got some debris when draining through a sieve.

I think you'll be fine using muslin bags. Others may have more experience and advice.
I've used pellets on 2 of my 4 ag brews and have just chucked them in.

It may just be the varieties I have used-but are the alpha acids percentages usually significantly higher with pellets? I have thus used less. Is this correct and if so presumably they are more cost efficient?

I've done 2 AG brews - one with pellets and the other (today) with leaf. I hated the leaf - my hop filter fell off during the boil and the lead just kept clogging my tap! I ended up pouring the wort out of my boiler like a bucket (through a sieve) into my FV. I'll stick to pellets from now on!

I use a homemade hop spider with a nylon paint strainer-type bag in my kettle and get little/no debris.

Hop pellets are the way forward in my opinion. They keep well and are easy to use.
