Hi guys

For my first two brews I went to a secondary FV. After a fair amount of reading I'm thinking that for my 3rd I won't bother.
What about this as an idea? Massive hop bag laid in to filter out any crap. Any problems with it? at 8:33

I only ever rack a brew into a second FV if I intend to leave it lagering for up to 12 weeks..

I use this to syphon the brew into a Bottling Bucket or directly into a PB if I'm using one.

Copper Syphon Tube.jpg

The clip on the copper pipe holds everything in place, the copper pipe means that I can slide the syphon into the FV very gently so as to not disturb any debris. There is a small notch cut into the bottom of the copper tube so that it can't form a seal with the bottom of the little filter.

The small filters are available from here ...

The Hop Bag system works (using a small sanitised tie-wrap to keep it in place) but it's a lot easier to sanitise, use and clean this little rig.

Enjoy! :thumb:

Good find, don’t actually need one at the moment, but have ordered one at 99p, in case I do in the future.

Don´t the racking gears you can buy in the UK come with a small gunk filter at the end?
My racking pump has a black thingy on the end which I imagine is supposed to filter but I can't see how. I still don't really know how to use it. Do I just push it down into the trub? Last time around I had quite a lot of sediment going into 2nd FV. This time I'd like to not use a 2nd FV but I can't see how I wont end up with lots of sediment in the bottle.
P.S Those filters from amazon look decent but they wont fit with my pump.

Yeah, I just rack with that.
Well it filters because it gets partly blocked. The sediment itself is the filter. And the cap is just a broad filter to allow for this filtering. Just like filtering a mash! The real filter is the crushed malt :).
The first 100ml is full with sediment and then it gets completely clear.

So basically you stick it in right till the bottom. You start racking. During the first 100ml the sediment directly surrounding the cap gets sucked in. And than you get a sort of hole in the sediment and no sediment gets sucked in further.

I rack without any other filters. Just a good cold crash and then I put my stainsteel steel racking gear in the fermenter. Usually give the fermenter a slight angle to make it easier.

The one I used before fitting the small filter was one of these:

https://www.wilko.com/homebrew-accessories+equipment/wilko-syphon-pack/invt/0022573

Ir's just fitted with a "U" shape at the end to lift the syphon out of the trub and doesn't filter anything.

Personally, I wouldn't dream of buying or using a pump to transfer the wort because A) It would be another bit of kit to keep clean and sanitised. B) It would be expensive when compared to a syphon tube. and C) It has to break down one day and Murphy's Second Law will come into effect. i.e.

Murphy's 1st Law - If it can happen it will happen.
Murphy's 2nd Law - When it happens, it will cause the maximum amount of distress to the greatest number of people.

Enjoy! :thumb:

I have syphon like the Wilko one and tie a piece of sanitised net curtain material around the bottom. It filters out the dry hops when bottling. Cheapskate but it works well.
