Hi Guys

is there any sort of home brew software to aid in designing recipes etc, if so, are there any that are better than others

Mike

Hi Mike,

There are quire a few difference programs out there - we even have a basic one built in to the forum (click on recipes at the top of this page).
Personally I use and very much like Beersmith :thumb:

Brewmate & Beer Engine are free-although not as in depth as Beersmith. (Beer Engine is ideal for GWs book & Brewmate has an awful lot of handy bells & whistles)

Yes, sorry, I should have said Beersmith is a commercial program - although with the exchange rate, it works out something like £10 (or it was last time I worked it out) which is absolutely damn good value in my book (it works on both Windows and Linux) :thumb:

Mac users can also think about BeerAlchemy. Linux users can consider QBrew too.

Beersmith is the one for me too! I've been all-grain brewing for over 40 years and thought I knew most things, but Beersmith helped me raise my game. Yes there is a cost, but it is so much better than any other homebrew software I have tried.

I use qbrew because it works natively on linux, is in the repositories and is free. GW's beer engine seemed absolutely fine to me when I had a look at it.

I guess you need to think about what you want to spend and what you want to run it on.

Personally I think the main thing is getting used to one piece of software and how its predictions work with your set up but no doubt somebody will be able tell why one bit of software is far superior to the others for one reason or another.

+1 for Beersmith

They have an app out already Eddie, a lightweight one that lets you bring your recipes off the desktop and use your device for your brewday. It rocks.

Cheers Guys

i had a look at most of the ones you mentioned and in the end downloaded Beersmith, it seemed to be easier to understand and had more features

it looks like Saturday is going to be my first brew day, Ive got all the equipment set up now, had an outside tap fitted this evening, just waiting on the malt delivery now

Mike

I have Brewmate ('cos it was free) and Beersmith ('cos it was on sale and only about £6). There's no doubt that Beersmith is the more capable programme.

However I'd recommend Brewmate if you're dabbling in brewing software for the first time, it's a lot simpler to set up and use than Beersmith and you'll be using it nice and quick. Not to mention it's free!

Brewmate

Download the free ones and have a play.If they dont suit then try a paid for one.
I use beer engine to get my grains and hops to where I want them and come brewday check out the batch sparge calculator.

There's definitely a mac specific version now. Been running it for about 2 years.
