Hi all, I just had a thought that instead of orange peel for my belgian wit why can't I just add orange juice? - has anyone gone down this route or is there a good reason why it's not a good idea?
 
I have never added it to a wit but I have just done a Elvis type Juice with grapefruit peel, blood orange peel and the juices with 1/2 ltr of clemetine juice. It has fermented out and I have had a taste and it is good but the wife wants it to be more orangy so tomorrow 1 ltr of orange juice will be added to combat the grapefruit bitterness. Now to get to the punch I have added orange juice before and it works well in the IPA's I have done before, I have also used mango and tropical juice before and that also works. I know that one forum member adds grapefruit juice at the pouring out stage to his drinks and says that works too
 
In my Ipa's I have used 1 litre depends on how fruity you want it. Do you want it to be dominant or to compliment the wit? I think 1 litre would be enough for me but everybody is different
 
Are you guys adding the juices once fermentation has finished? What effect will the extra sugar have on the brew? Do you add less sugar when priming? Cheers
 
I can't t remember where I read it but an article about fermenting orange juice asked why it is not a thing? We ferment apples, grapes etc so why not orange juice? The answer appeared to be because it tastes 5h1t3. I'm sure adding a bit to the fermenter won't do too much harm., but I'd be careful. I've certainly added orange peel before but I now like coriander seed and amarillo hops which both add an orange flavor.
 
So it's turned out a lovely drop, all 4 other testers ranged from amazing, delicious, lovely and gorgeous. Me, I wanted a bigger orange hit - you can taste orange just not enough IMO. I've been told to put it on the repeat list. Next up... Dunkleweisen
 
Working through (or rather everyone else is) the second batch. Numbers almost identical to the first batch. It's going to have to be brewed twice a year. It's my most popular brew but not my favourite I do enjoy a glass or two as a 'lighter' session beer of 6.3% 🤭. I would normally get a few hoegaarden in for Xmas as a lighter drink but this and brewdogs duopolis cover that base now 👍
