I'm planning this along the lines of Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby, a "strong mild" and want a colour around 50EBC; I've used BeerSmith, BrewMate and Beer Engine with different results, see below

Brew length 23L; 75% efficiency
Mash 90mins at 67C

5720g (92%) Mild ale malt 7 EBC
310g (5%) Caraaroma malt 400 EBC
120g (2%) Chocolate malt 1000 EBC
62g (1%) Roasted Barley 1200 EBC
45g Fuggles (6.4%) 90 mins
20g Fuggles (6.4%) 10mins

This is what I get from BeerSmith (BrewMate is similar); OG1062, FG1016, EBC 51.8, IBU 35

and Beer Engine; OG1059, FG1015, EBC 118, IBU 33,

The big difference is in the colour, which has left me confused (not difficult), I've checked the settings as much as I'm able, any assistance would be welcome, thanks

Never use Beer Engine, but I use Beer Smith a lot, and it always comes out spot on for the OG, so I trust it a lot.

Thanks K, it was only when I got different results on the colour, I downloaded a trial version of BrewSmith, so am just getting used to it, but will rely on it for this recipe. :thumb:

There are different formulae for colour (At least three that I know of) . . . and then you have to decide if you calculate the colour extraction from the grain to include efficiency or exclude it.

Like all of these things it will not give you an exact value, but a ball park . . .the actual value will be round about the calculated one. Pick a formulae that gives a value similar to what you are getting and stick with it. . . . Ideally when we publish recipes we should specify the formulae that are used to calculate teh figures we quote.

By default I use Tinseth for hop utilisation . . . although I like the elegance of Wheelers (used in Beer Engine)
And I use Rager for (I think) for colour

Thanks Aleman, could you please point me in the right direction for the colour formulae, as (hopefully) I could then work it out by hand.
