Hi all,
I am very new to all this, but I thought I would have a go.
First brew I think will be a disaster as I had a leak when I transferred the brew from the first fermentation vessel to the second and had to quickly clean a another barrel and pour the brew in, lot of air introduced, has now been sitting in the second barrel for 3 weeks, will be tasting on Saturday.

I intend to have another go at brewing on Saturday and these are the ingredients I have, and suggestions welcome.

4.5k Coopers unhopped Malt extract
Styrian Goldings
Fuggles
Goldings
Irish Moss
Muntons premier gold yeast

I've never brewed extract myself however your list of ingredients looks promising. I do a nice pale ale bittered with goldings and fuggles and late hopped with styrians that you'd be able to replicate.

Aim for something around 1.040 and 30 EBU's then chill your wort post boil to around 80C and throw in a large handful of styrians. Chill decant and ferment.

I could work it out more exactly for you when I get home if you'd like? I'll need to know what volume of beer you're wanting to brew and the AA% of the hops if you're looking for a recipe suggestion :thumb:

Thanks J_P

Well as i said i am very new so i was with you but don't know about EBU's and AA%
i take it that it's to do with the biterness.
i am aiming to make 5 gallons and i do like a bitter beer such as Landlord

EBU's are bitterness units there is a calculator to work them out here
AA% are the levels of Alpha Acids within the hops, they should be marked on the hop packets as a percentage.

If you like Landlord then you're in luck as the ingredients you list are what's in Landlord so we could probably suggest a recipe that would be a reasonable copy.

You really need the AA's :(
don't think i am going home, can't drive, drank to many pints for lunch, Mrs is not happy

Don't REALLY need the AA% but it'll help.

Don't mention that you drank too many pints. BS will want a drinking competition with ya.

Don't worry though, he's gone all lightweight of late anyway. :P

Welcome to the best beer forum that there is.

Thanks all

Had to stay in London last night, promised the Mrs that i will only have 2 pints for lunch, so it seems she is talking, however as a good friend once said 'tricky chaps women'

Ah, but you didn't say which two of the pints.

yes an online one, the hops have a young's ubrew lable, gives weight, name and best before date

That's strange, i'm sure somebody who uses those hops or knows about them will shine some light on the subject.

Yeah, that's the Youngs I've come to hate :D God, they are **** at supplying stuff to brewers! After all there is no difference between Tettnang and Pacific Gem  The best thing you can do is to use the 10 year averages as an assumption of the hop bittering power.

Goldings 5.7%
Fuggles 4.9%
Syrians Goldings 4.5%

If someone can do the maths for amounts you should at least achieve something that resembles landlord.

Please, please, please don't buy any ingredients that have a Youngs label on them
