Hi Guys

Just woke up and walked into the kitchen where Im keeping my barrel which has fermenting cider in it and found the barrel is hissing at me! I guess its trapped air escaping ( have one of those screw on barrel lids witch a pressure valuve fitted in it) Do you think I need to unscrew the lid a bit more to release more air or do you think the valvue will do its job, dont want to want it exploding and covering the kitchen but more importantly there are 40 pints of cider at risk!

BTW, its not hissing permanently, just once every minute or so

Worried of Northwood :D

Is this in a screw topped fermenter or a pressure barrel?

FV lids should already be drilled for a bung and airlock.

Pressure barrels shouldn't really be used as fermenting vessels, they are only for storing and dispensing after the brew's finished. If it is in one of these, unscrew the lid or it could get messy.

Pressure barrel

Just checked, it isnt the lid but the seal around the tap, must of been going for a while as about a pint on the floor (smells good tho!) just lifted the barrel over the sink to release some, think its because the liquid in the barrel goes past where the screw in tap is and I must not of tightened it hard enough, do you think it will be ok to unscrew the lid, put my hand in and tighten the tap from the inside?

Cheers

PS, emptying it a bit seems to have stopped the hissing round the seal, relieved!

Bit risky putting your arm in, could lead to bacteria in ur brew.... best thing is to gently siphon into another sterilized container and sort the tap out then siphon back in. :thumb:

Don't forget to clean and re-sterilize the keg.

When I got my brewing kit I didnt get a brewing bucket, just the keg (king keg) so just to be on the safe side I'll see if I can find one today. This is the first time Ive done cider, just normally done ale.

When I released some it seemed quite fizzy, is that right?

I take it you've fermented in the keg?? If yes how long has it been in?

Buy a wine fermenter with the screw top from Wilkinsons or any other brewing supplier , they're great... :thumb:

Yes, fermented in the keg for 6 days now, the distructions said about 5-12 days depending on the tempreture and as its not roasting in the kitchen I thought Id leave it for the full 12 days to ferment, then transfer into the outside shed to clear. Will look out for a wine fermenter, will find a wilkos first!

just clicked on your link for Wilkos, didnt realise they done so much brewing kit!

Cheers

It'll be OK as long as he boils his arm first...
LoL

But seriously Paul,
You've not done it right..... you have to ferment for 10-14 days in a fermenter then once fermentation has done and it's starting to clear you transfer it into a barrel/keg or bottle it...
You've been fermenting in a barrel??? your lucky it's not blown the tap off never mind leaking...

Hope that helps!! :thumb:

This is only the second time I have brewed and the first time cider. When I first got my kit I followed the instructions and used the kit which didnt come with fermenter and didnt say I had to buy one! I didnt think there would be much difference in brewing cider and ale, which is what I brewed last time.

I know now from the learned fourmites to do my fermenting in a bin and transfer it to the barrel.

Anyway, now the level of the cider is partway below the tap it seems to of released some pressure, cant get the cap off anyway!
