Hi

Just saying hello

Brand new to this brewing malarkey. My father used to have a cellar full of wine and beer back in the 80s, unfortunately for me I didn’t bother to share his hobby until now, hopefully starting on real ale if I can.

Anyway, I intend to read the threads here before purchasing equipment to brew from grains and hops rather than a kit with the wort already done.

Welcome to the forum, as a returning home brewer after a long absence, this forum is the place for loads of info/help/advice. Used to do kits 30 years ago!!, but came back recently and doing All Grain now.

Welcome to the forum.
You might find this useful.
Basic beginners guide to brewing your own beer from a kit - The HomeBrew Forum
I always suggest to new brewers that they get to grips with the brewing process by doing a small number of kits first to get the hang of things, before deciding if and how they want to progress. All the basic equipment is the same however you brew your beer. And having done the basics you are then in a much better position to make an informed decision rather than try to understand at the outset the many and varied pieces of advice you will receive from well meaning forum members.

Thanks everyone, An you are correct with the activities of youth.......ah, oh well Im old now so beer it is...:)

I shall take your advice and start with a kit, however there is one bit of kit I thought I would buy to begin with, a conical fermenter, cut out the bucket and siphon stage, I have already got kegs from DF, so can keg straight into them. Is it a wise investment for a beginner (a conical), i am thinking of a Brew Devil 30 L SS with dump valve. or a Fermzilla Mk2 starter kit...advice to the uninitiated please.

Hello and welcome.

Kits take a good bit less equipment, and time. Shame to spend a bunch of money to do all grain then find you don't care for the hobby.

I've been doing all grain over twenty years but just bought a couple kits to try out. Did a few back when I started which weren't very good, mostly my process I'm sure. I expect they've gotten better over the years. Being able to put 23 liters together of pretty good beer in less than an hour would be nice when time is at a premium.

Right now, I'd skip the conical and get a bucket. Cheap, and easy to clean.
