Hi, just introducing myself, decided to have a go at making some wine at home , have ordered the gear , should be starting next weekend. Can anyone recommend a good brand to start with 30 bottle packs, would like to try a chardonnay first, I am based in Leeds so thought I might go down to Abbey and see how they are , any recommendations ?

all the best

Hi & welcome.

It depends on how much you want to spend on a kit. The dearer the kit the more grape juice you get.

Beaverdale 5.5L & California Connoisseur 7.5L for just over £40 are good.

Kenridge classic and Vintners World Reserve both 10L for around £50 are very good.

Kenridge Showcase and Selection both 15L for around £65-70 are excellent.

Haven't tried Kenridge Founders (18L) or Selection Estates (16L) £95-110 but would imagine they're superb.

All are very easy to make.

Thanks for the replies, decided to go for two kits to compare results, one Beaverdale Chardonnay at just over £50 and one Muntons Chardonnay from Wilkinsons at £37 both are 30 bottle. The wife decided she wanted to join in so I am doing the Beaverdale and she is doing the Muntons, we diligently followed instructions for both yesterday , mine was a bit more involved than the Muntons, which basically said clean everything, chuck in the juice , add yeast then wait for a couple of weeks. Both seem to be starting to ferment today so will have to wait and see (patience is a virtue I know), mine says to check until hydro reading is at 1050 (they both started at 1082 ish) then transfer to Carboy or second vessel to finish the fermentation or just leave it to finish before transfering , so not sure which route to take yet ,any thoughts anyone ?.The wifes (Munton) says just leave it to ferment then transfer so she is sticking to the instructions, hers says ready to drink in about 3 to 4 weeks, I am sceptical about that and am expecting to bulk age them both in a couple of 5 gallon carboys for a couple of months at least , time will tell , will let you know progress as we go on

Great site by the way , spent hours reading posts in the last couple of weeks, very informative

regards

Tom
