Hello! I don't know about any of you (before you started brewing), but I've said to my girlfriend over the past years, repeatedly, that I intend on making my own beer, but never actually done it. However, this time I actually intend on going through with it!

We recently came back from visiting friends in Sweden and while there I found a new love for beer, particularly IPAs. For those of you that haven't been to Sweden or don't know as much about their alcohol culture. Swede's are big summer drinkers, the vast majority of Swede's have a good month or so off in the summer to make the most of life, including alcohol! In all shops across Sweden, you can only buy drinks with an ABV of no higher than 3.5%, but wait, before you all cry out, they have a solution... Systembolaget; it is a government owned, off licence chain. Their selection of alcohol, particularly beers, is other worldly and staff are all well versed in what they sell and offer valuable guidance when exploring anything new. We tried so many different beers, it was fantastic.

Queue arriving home in sunny Devon, I nipped to Sainsbury's, Tesco, Asda, Aldi, Lidl and Morrisons in search of good IPAs and found no more than 12 varieties between them (a Tesco superstore near me only had 1!!!). Did I buy lager? Well, yes I did, but that's not the solution here. I decided to embark on a quest to make my own IPA. I want to start with kits and stick to them until I have a firm grasp on what makes a good beer, then I intend on making my own.

Only time shall tell how successful that endeavour will be!

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your brewing :)

Once you progress to all grain you have the ability to brew any style of beer you want. Good quality ingredients are readily available nowadays.

Welcome to the forum Benji. It's true, the supermarkets don't have much choice for American style IPAs, but they are improving. If you can find a good bottle shop nearby you'll be spoilt for choice by comparison. My recommendation for brewing is to get the basic equipment, start with a Young's American IPA kit first, nail the fundamentals, and upgrade to all grain when you're ready. However you proceed, you won't regret it. This is a great hobby!

Thank you both for the welcome.

It's funny you should say that, after browsing this forum for the last few days, that's exactly what I decided to do! I'm going to make a post over in the equipment section to make sure I haven't missed anything and I have couple of questions too.

You're more or less where I was a year or so ago. Sound advice from those above (in this thread that is...). But I think you've already sussed it. Start with kits, learn what's happening etc and then progress to all grain. I'm only now, just about to begin AG, got the ingredients, now I just need some time and space. Good luck Benji.
Welcome to the best forum for sound advice BTW.

Thank you. I'm as much interested in the process as I am the finished product. AG is a goal, but not one I'm looking towards yet, I want to start small and work up to it.

The youngs american kits are quite good out of the box, if you want something to tweak look at the coopers draught as a base and add things to it.

Thank you. That seems like a good stepping stone between kits and making your own from scratch.
