Hello Everyone!

My name is Dave, I'm 51 and live in North Wales. After watching prices creep up over the years, I decided that I'd had enough with "shop bought" wines and ciders, and so have taken the plunge and entered the world of home brewing. I've just bottled (and sampled) a Belvino 7 Day "Classic Red" wine kit, and whilst it probably wouldn't win any prizes, I'm dead chuffed with it, as to be honest, I was expecting it to look and taste a bit rough (as my first go at home brewed wine was some 30 years ago). It would seem that kits have come a long way since those days.

I figured out that in all, the costs were @ £1.50 per litre, which has completely sold the whole home brewing thing to me. The way I saw it, if I bought the quantity of wine I made out of the kit in a supermarket, I'd have paid three times more for it, so even if it was only half as good (I actually think it's better than some of the boxed stuff), I'd be on a winner. I reckon I won :D

First thing I did after bottling was start off another 21L kit - this one is a Cantina 5 Day Chardonnay. I've just been out to the shed to check (it's now 01:28), and it's on its merry way. As with anything - if I get "the bug", I'm going into it as big as I can. Fingers crossed on that one.

I'll probably stick to kits as they're easy, and to be honest I'm a much more a drinker than a connoisseur. I also don't think I've got the patience to wait weeks or months (I also don't have the space), but totally respect those that have, as I can see what great fun home brewing is - I sat there last night grinning like a Cheshire cat

I probably won't post that often, but I'll make sure I learn as much as I can from this Forum in the event that I win the lottery, buy a bigger shed, and try brewing with natural ingredients. That said, pleased to meet you!

Dave

Welcome Dave to home wine making and the benefits of making it yourself. If your happy with the resultant wine, then your onto a winner.
do try to put a bottle away from each brew seperate for a period of say 6 months storage. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Thank you PD. Yes I'm going to try - it's just that it'll be very hard if I get another winner ;) The main problem I have here is lack of space. I'm in a two up two down cottage with a 12' x 8' shed, so space is at a premium. I'd put wine racks on the walls if I could, but they're already covered with guitars! I had considered throwing all my wife's clothes out and using her wardrobes (who needs two wardrobes?) and drawers, but I didn't dare let that thought linger long. I am planning upgrading the shed, but it won't be until next year. The shed though well organised is stuffed with the usual freezer, tumble dryer, bikes, running machine etc., so I'm pretty much limited to 5 - 10 gallon runs, with storage for @ 40 x 1.5 litre bottles. I'm amazed I even found the space for all that.

As I said I won't be posting much (as I know zip about brewing), but I'm grateful that this board exists so that I can learn more and maybe "progress" to something more challenging. One thing I didn't factor in with regard to my costings is the fact I'm on a water meter - I didn't realise how much water you'd need to make 5 gallons of wine what with all the sterilising and washing etc. It's probably cost me 300 hundred quid ..... but I have enjoyed it

It looks like it's going to be a nice day. Hope you have one!

Dave

Quite a few on here are on water meters and have been surprised at the costs, they state any increase in the bills has been minimal. Some have changed over to meters since brewing and have had reductions in their bills.

Space and room is a continual problem for wine and beer makers lol....... theres so many brews you want to try..... :D

Hehehehe!

The thought half crossed my mind to do an "Ozzy Osbourne" and bury the finished product in the garden in the event of catastrophe, but I reckon she'd spot the loose flagstones ;)

I spent a good couple of hours reading through various posts today and it was time well spent. Wine from "Ribena"? Who'd'a thunk it?, but that's exactly what I'll be having a go at next. Turbo cider? I thought it would be like jacking up a bottle of Weston's with a slug of the hard stuff as I sometimes do, but no .... it would appear to be an extremely quick way to arrive at relative drunkeness - and I'm all for that

So thank's to everyone. This is a truly great place, and of infinitely more interest to me than the entire contents of the British Library.

Dave
