Hello fellow travellers. I'm from Glasgow and have been doing home brews for a couple of years now but only can and kilo stuff. I'm moving house next month and think I'll have some extra space so the time seems right to graduate towards all grain brewing. Right now I'm at the planning stage and I'd appreciate any tips anyone has on starting off cheaply. I'm off the now to have a browse through some older threads so have a nice day folks.

Welcome to the forum. :thumb:

Have a look in the how to section for building your own equipment :thumb:

LLD,

Plastic & Tesco kettle elements, batch sparging, or BIB is the way to go in order to do it as cheaply as possible.

The really cheap plastic containers ie those which are also used for bird feed are I think probably a bit sporting for handling boiling liquids but you should be able to scrounge some bulk mango chutney containers form Indian takeaways and get started.

Cheers

RD

I'm in Pollok. Most of my stuuff has been from Tesco which saves me a journey to the West End, which is good because I'm a lazy swine.

@Rokdok. Thanks. Been doing a wee bit of research. I think I'd like to start off BIB. That way I can start by using a large stock pot then build on it from there. Something about the idea of heating elements, plastic and beer I'm going to be drinking doesn't sit right with me; although I've been mighty impressed by some of the handywork of folk on here regarding the mango chutney barrels.

I've found some pots at Powell brewing. Tried to upload the link but I wasn't allowed.
Just wondering if anyone has any experience of them or any other ideas about how to get a hold of other suitable steel vessels. Maybe I could ask someone I know to accidently leave a beer keg outside at closing time - although that seems a bit extreme.

Thanks to all for the welcomes.

A lot of folk buy them from a German company. They sell on eBay but you get a better price if you email them direct: [email protected]

Kegs are the property of the breweries therefore you would be handling /possessing stolen goods :nono:

Hey Lagerloverdude, does the Tesco in Silverburn do homebrew stuff. My 3 local Tescos dont

If not, it did until very recently. I'm going for the messages tomorrow, so I'll have a look and let you know. The selection has been getting gradually smaller, so I've been wondering if it might not disappear altogether.

It's a wee bit dearer than the shop in Partick but easier for me.

Thanks Joey. That's the way to go. I'm going to see if I can get one, or maybe two depending on an executive decision. And then maybe a big cool box. Man.....Don't start me.

@ Gary. Yes they do still sell kits. Not a bad selection, and wine and cider. They have the munton's beer kit enhancer too which I'd recommend. It's worth a look.
Good luck.

Scott.

It's two or three aisles up on the left as you walk in. Not sure where it would be in Springburn. Bearsden to over here's a nightmare. Maryhill Rd...

I was in the one in Maryhill last week but never noticed any homebrew stuff. Im back at work on Monday night. I might take a walk over to the Springburn Tesco. I work in the Mail Centre for Royal Mail. Im night shift.
