Just a note of a couple of small jobs done this week and plans for next week.

This week I dry hopped the saison and Pirate Pale, and yesterday I cleaned my beer lines. This will be the first time I’ve ever dry hopped a saison, I’m just curious how well it works with this style.

Next week I will need to keg the beers in fermenters and that will give me space in the fermentation cabinet for tranche 2…

Monday should see me kegging the saison and brewing another batch of Butterfly Effect, my American pale.

Tuesday I’ll be kegging the Belgian single and brewing that porter I had to put back from Tranche 1.

Wednesday I’ll be kegging the Pirate Pale but won’t be brewing anything because I need 2 slots in the fermentation cabinet for my third brew.

Thursday will be a busy day because the bitter will get kegged and I’ll brew another batch of imperial stout which needs me to mash twice to get the volume of high gravity wort because my boiler/mash tun can’t take much more than 5Kg of grain. This beast of a beer also gets a 3-stage starter so I will start building the starter from Sunday.

Tranche 2 begins…

Keg cleaned for kegging the saison tomorrow.

I think that all qualifies me for a walk to the pub 😉

I’ve just finished a busy day brewing, kegging, tending a yeast starter, and preparing for another brewday tomorrow.

Todays brew was a batch of my American Pale, Butterfly Effect - now sitting in the fermentation cabinet where the saison sat. It was the saison I kegged earlier seen in the glass.

The yeast starter is for the Imperial I’ll be brewing on Thursday. The picture below shows the 3-stage starter at the end of stage-1.

Tomorrow I’ll keg that Belgian and brew another Porter.

We went out last night so I didn’t update this thread. I did keg the Belgian though and brewed the porter, and of course started stage-3 of the starter for tomorrows imperial.

Today I kegged the Pirate Pale and the Best Bitter giving me two slots in the fermentation cabinet for the imperial. The starter completed stage-3 and the picture below shows the extent to which it’s grown. It’s in the fridge now to get all that good stuff to drop out of suspension before I decant it tomorrow and bring it up to temperature while I’m brewing.

I forgot to mention the need to cold-steep the roast grains and I did that today too.

So that’s it, I’m all ready for the big brew day tomorrow.

Todays brew of the big Imperial is done, long day. The OG is 1134 so I’m on track for 12% or more depending on how successful the yeast is at munching through all that sugar. No puny little bubble trap for this monster and even the head space you see here may not be enough - I’m speaking from experience here!

I looked in on the imperial this morning and as I might expect there were about 2” of krausen and the feast has just begun. It’s the next 24 Hrs that worry me a little because that’s when the eating frenzy reaches a crescendo and that krausen might try to break free 🫣

This week, when I’ve not been at the pub, I’ve been working on a small brew shed project.

This is my brew shed earlier this week. An open outdoor bar in the lovely sunshine.

It’s not going to be warm and sunny for much longer so I decided to build a temporary wall. I already have the far side closed using a transparent tarp and I have another transparent tarp I fit in the winter that closes the longer side. The side nearest us has always been left open and while two closed sides keeps pretty much all the bad weather off us it is still quite cold sitting at the bar. Closing off the third side will solve that.

This is the finished product. A bit more work was required for this one because I obviously need a door. The whole thing bolts together and will be taken down again in the warmer weather.

Yesterday I kegged the latest batch of my APA, Butterfly Effect. Today I kegged my latest Porter.

Tomorrow I will probably keg my latest batch of Imperial Stout and then I need to be thinking about my next batch of beers. I will definitely brew another batch of bitter and pale ale and I think I’ll brew another German lager but I’m not sure yet what to brew as the fourth beer - or even whether to brew a dark or pale beer 🤷‍♂️

If you're looking for ideas/recipes I recently brewed a California Common and its one of the nicest things I've brewed. Lovely malty flavour.

Today I cleaned my beer lines and discovered a mould monster hiding on the floor between kegs. A quick look around round the culprit - a FFL to 3/8 JG fitting on a beer ball-lock wasn’t nipped up and allowed beer to seep out, down the keg, and on to the floor. It must have been seeping since I last cleaned my beer lines two weeks ago.

All cleaned up, bleached and sanitised and then I continued cleaning my beer lines. This brewing hobby seems to have an endless capacity to keep me busy! 🤷‍♂️

I’m rewarding/consoling myself with an Nitro Imperial Stout - not the one I kegged yesterday, this one was kegged in February.

The weather isn’t looking too bad tomorrow and Tuesday so I’ll brew another batch of my pale ale and best bitter on those days.

I then plan to brew a German lager and another beer but was undecided on what I wanted to brew. I’ve now decided on an ESB so I bought a small selection for inspiration.

I've got an ESB sitting in a couple of demis and an early sample was really nice. Should be nice on those cold nights with the fire on.
