Has a brewbelt tainted my beer ?

Thanks for that OAD.

Point taken.....I'll give it a try.

Late edit.

Timerswitch bought from B&Q today..... looks a doddle to use.

Thanks again.

I use a brew belt powered through a cheapo digital temp controller I got off eBay. I put the brew belt right at the bottom on the FV to give it maximum heating capability.

It works perfectly. Set to 20C, the FV fluctuates from 19.8C to 20.2C and will easily ferment from 1050 to 1011 in about 5 days using SO4 yeast.

On really cold days, I cover the FV with a blanket and the temp usually fluctuates less.

Before I got the temp controller, I did overheat an FV with a brew belt. The beer ended up having a lot of 'Banana' flavours. That eventually subsided and it turned out quite a nice beer!

Have you got a link for that Bob? Would be interested myself. Presumably there must be a thermometer on it somewhere, do you have to drop that into the beer or stick it to the outside?

Hi

I did the same as Bob, £20 for a thermostat, connect it to a brewbelt put the built in temp probe on the outside of the FV with some bubble wrap over it, set the desired temp and they just work together.

I now have a temp controller that I can plug a brewbelt in the heat side of things and a large fan in the cool side of things set temp to 12 degrees and when it goes over 12degs the fan comes on, if it goes under the brewbelt comes on, I will struggle to achieve 12 degrees in the summer but I will be aiming to keep it around 14 - 16 degrees then.

Oh I brew lager by the way, best brewed at 12 degs with proper lager yeast.
