hi all. is there any difference between the 2,as in do they release the same amount or is it a price thing?for the same quantity of gas in a bottle v bulbs. the convenience of only having one bottle or in my case ,not finding spent cartridges in the cellar because i forget to bin them. suppose it's easier to pop down wilco's than posting off for a refill and maybe being gasless if your timings wrong.thanks

Hi all, I'm new to brewing (and this forum )
Posted this in another part , hopefully this is the right section!?
I have a standard wilko fermenting tub , which I used and know works . For Christmas I got the wilko pressure barrel..... Can I do all stages of the brewing in the pressure barrel? ( at the moment I'm using kits .

I now know I need the injector cap ( I bought the small 10 pack of Co2 canisters from wilko ) as I thought they'd be useful .

it'll do fine . lots of posts get lost if no ones seen for a few days. i've ended up posting again on my own thread just to keep it alive.people are busy etc, thou mine maybe a poor thread, mind you.:smile:but what i've learnt on here, is your beer needs a blast of co2 once you've had ago of it. i.e drink a third then gas then another then gas then hurry up with the last third. my issue was with the last third going flat. which thankfully asking on here i can address. yep , drink quicker. geeked out today with looking into different co 2 systems. not a chore. just putting it all in there. cheers

sorry mate . yep, you need the cap . check on net which go with your barrel. for the extra quid or so , get one with a brass thread.should last longer. cheers. really new myself. and still enquiring . if i'm wrong hopefully someone'll put me right. enjoy your brew.

Hey davereal, ah thanks , I haven't used a forum in a while , so just to clarify I can use the pressure barrel from start to finish ? Obviously buy the proper lid / injector for the stage after fermenting? Then use the co2 when it's ready to drink instead of adding the sugar for the same level as the bottling ? Many thanks

That's not a good idea. You want to rack it out of the primary fv bucket into the barrel to get it off the dead yeast cake, unless of course you're looking for some real 'funky' flavours :sick:

Also, you need the priming sugar to fizz the thing up, the CO2 is to keep it topped up and the air/oxygen out. Although, having said that, someone in another thread had success with an ale, see here:

I looked at all these CO2 methods, sodastream included, and best option for me (in the long term) was to get a cylinder/gauges & various attachments. I've got enough gas for 2+ years, use it as much as I want, without worrying about running out any time soon. Downsides? It def ain't portable :?

you'r correct. i was answering the the co 2 issue. as in ,once in the p.b.. AFTER you transferred from your fermenting bin. sorry bout that. deffo don't think you can do start to finish just in your barrel. sorry for the confusion .

I'm with BaggyBill on this one. Having also tried a range of C02 systems, including Midget Widget, I must say the full size bottle and regulator is by far the best. Midget Widget is potentially a good system but is expensive to start and the refills seem to be getting difficult to get now (and expensive if you have to post)
You can get rent free CO2 bottles for the price (or less) of the Midget Widget system and CO2 Mig welding regulator/gauges are not that dear.

Near the top of the page (bottom right side of the HBF logo), click 'Forum', then click on the forum you want to post to and there you have the 'New Thread' button :-D

Just make sure you post to the right forum i.e. an appropriate subject as there's a good few to choose from.
