Instead of buying 4 packs, I want to grow 1 pack to be pitched into 4 20 l fvs. I'm unsure about this though as I don't want to ruin the yeast.
Any suggestions?

if set on this easiest way would prob be to make 4 individual starters ie split 4 ways- if u had to, i read somewhere a 1 litre starter gives a 50% increase in yeast, so maybe looking at 4x 2l minimum??? not totally sure but should work ok, might still be underpitching

i was looking at doing this but tbh easiest thing is to use 4 packets

or

do one brew and split the slurry 3-4 ways then job done...

im looking at splitting a generic amber brewday so i can grow up a belgian strain (for saving and doing a big beer) while growing up some s-05 in the other- might just do a double brewday, see how the mood takes me

yeah DJ would work but if meant to be enough for 20l dont think putting it in 5l will give much growing space or potential, unless can airate and stir

Don't think its the best idea, from what I've read dried yeast isn't designed for being put into a starter. You would be best off either using four packs or fermenting one batch then splitting the yeast cake between the other three

+1

Its really not worth it. We all like to do things on the cheap, but for the price of SO-4 you might as well buy 4 pkts. If you want to build up your yeast bank have a look at my post Harvesting Yeast in the "How to" section
