I've just received a "dwarf" variety, that "only" grows to 15' or so. I'll try to find the name in a bit.

Thought for a bit of fun I'll bung it into a corner of my allotment and let it grow up my shed. If I get any hops from it, then it'll be a bonus.

I gave my allotment up
Sick of peaple helping there self to my crops
So I will let it go along my garden fence then over the shed
I will go for a full size plant, I think
Will bring back memories of hop picking as a kid

I've looked at this to. Depends a lot on your location and hours of sunlight on the day.

Remember a lot of people also say that hops are poisonous to dogs. not sure how true this is though.

Good point on the dog, recerch time
I live in Kent, lots of hops grown here

I grow dwarf varieties as I don't really have the room or the inclination to grow a full size one.
I tried golden tassels last year, some sources say it's ornamental some say it's a Brewers hop. In my experience it was an ornamental variety, but I think it'll depend on local conditions because as we know hops are landrace types - meaning their characters change given growing conditions.
This time I'm trying Prima Donna aka First Gold. This is defo a Brewers hop ;-)
I'm going to use the hops wet in a harvest brew at the end of the summer. Good excuse to get the lads over for a BBQ and a **** up.
All I need now is a summer.

I'am thinking of growing one vine, just for fun
What type would be most usefull

I bought 3 prima donna (first Gold) and one cascade to start my hop garden. Went for First Gold because I like the hop and its dwarf (relatively). Then I got carried away at the checkout and went back and bought a cascade.
All are now temporarily potted up in the greenhouse, but need to keep them slightly colder since they are showing signs of sprouting so will move them outside and only shelter them on frosty nights. Need to sort out the beds I'm putting them in.

I had a wild one start growing up the side of the house that I'm building. At first I thought it was a marajuana plant, as it was exactly in the area that a 'musician' had helped me lay some concrete, if you get my drift.

It has come up every year since, but every year I've had to cut it down, due to the building work. This year, as long as it hasn't been poisoned by the screed slopped all over the ground, I'm going to leave it.

I was thinking of placing an order at Willingham's. I better get a move on I think.

Prima Donna is the one I got too. £3.89 plus £3 postage on ebay.

Not even opened the parcel yet, but it looks like a small rhizome. Doubt that'll be a problem though from what I've read on the care of them.

Just ordered 5 rhizomes from Willingham's. As I was afraid of, they have run out of a number, so I didn't have as much choice as I would have liked.

Got to start digging now!

I had three First Gold plants that had survived over 2 years in tiny pots whilst we were between houses. Unfortunately I left them out of the pots whilst the kids were playing gardening - now i have one left :-( Hopefully it will flourish in its nice new (large) pot this year...

I'm considering purchasing another variety to grow around the back garden (over the shed?)

Another first gold/prima Donna potted up in my back yard along with an EKG. Been potted out since last November.

Hopefully the soil is draining freely and the rhizome hasn't rotted. Should see a bit of sprouting in a month or so.

I planted my first hop plant earlier this month. It's the Prima Donna dwarf variety and I can't wait to see what it does. I got mine from www.essentiallyhops.co.uk

£40 delivery to France for 4 rhizomes! What planet are they on? I was just checking out with PayPal, and then that came up. Shame, cos I would have liked some Fuggles and Cascade.

I don't suppose anyone has any rhizomes sitting around doing nothing? I'll do you a swop with my no-name wild French little number!

They can be a bit steep. I only bought one rhizome to see how things go. I didn't think it was too bad value for something that can be harvested for up to 20 years or so.

I don't have any other rhizomes around, but your wild, unnamed French variety sounds really interesting.

Ebay might be your best bet. The seller I bought from says they deliver to the EU for £10.

Cross breeding HBF stylee as the kids of auld (matfen brewer spelling) would have said. I looked at a 'local' place (20 miles away) and they sell small plants. But you have to reserve them and collect or pay a hefty 'live goods-fresh flowers' delivery charge.

And if you Google Birmingham roof delivery, I hold no hope in them arriving intact. :-)
