The washer on the porcelain cap!

Do you change it or clean it and reuse it until it has worn?

Reason I ask is I can only find them for £2.60 for 10 (washers that is)

And I plan on using this style of bottle for my next brew Nelson's revenge as I have a wherry in a keg! And I want to get some stock building up so I can leave for a few months to condition etc.

I have a feeling I have no choice in the matter! But was hoping using this style of bottle would be more Eco friendly than using tin caps! When bottling my brews.

What do you guys think?

Re-using any bottle is extremely eco-friendly anyway. Fill the grolsch style bottles then start collecting normal brown ones to save the planet and get another brew on! It's your duty.

i haven't brought any yet. but i don't buy ale in the bottle as its expensive, which is why i started brewing my own.

its funny the wife made a comment the other day, but you hardly drink!!

i replyed i am an ale drinker i dont enjoy larger out of cans only in the pub! god knows the bitter like john smiths is rank! no matter how you buy it, pub or can! and going out is way to expensive these days. and not all sell real ale. so that is why i have started brewing my own!!!!

i think i need to see how much i can afford and go from there! standard 500ml bottles in which i will go to my local pubs and see if i can recycle a few, using tin caps

or bite the bullet and buy the grolsch bottles and just use them. no need to get hold of anymore as i have both bottles and keg, while 1 is conditioning the other is getting drunk lol.

thanks for the replys guys.

i use them until they look worn out then take the whole bottle back to the supermarket to get my deposit back and buy a full bottle as replacement.

Deposit? What country are you in?

Oh, and welcome ;)

Not sure if they're the right size but Wilkinsons do then. Not in the brewing section though - they're on sale along with the Kilner jars and jam making stuff.

I though sperm banks were the only places accepting small deposits nowadays! ;)

Not familiar with Grolsch bottles, but here in France there are several beers which come in swing top bottles, so the spares are fairly common (Tried to send list of ebay sellers, but was told in big red letters it looked to spammy and had to remove URL's!!!) If you do a search on ebay.fr for "RONDELLE CAOUTCHOUC POUR BOUCHON MECANIQUE" you will find them. Or ask on JBK ;)

However, in the last couple of years most swing tops have the rubber washers bonded on to the porcelaine bit, and can't easily be changed. :x Eventually, though, you can swap them for complete new tops like these (same problem as above!!)
