Probably not much as WY1469 is a really nice yeast giving the beer lots of character and john smiths is a bit bland

Interesting to know, I'm going to make it him anyway...hopefully he'll enjoy it...his birthday isn't until December anyway...

Make a test batch for yourself!

Using S04 will taste different from WYeast 1469 but I think they'll still both taste great

I've recently brewed this beer using S04 and its gone down very well with anyone who's tried it.
It's a bright beer and quite malty. I actually dry hopped with 20g First Gold to try to increase the hop profile. Not sure this actually added anything, difficult to know having not tried it without, maybe increased the perceived bitterness a little as it's fairly bitter.
If I was to brew it again I would reduce my priming sugar a little as I do find it a bit gassy. I think I added around 4g sugar per litre as I thought Greg Hughes' recommended 2.5g per litre for a bitter seemed a bit low.

I'm surprised at that. I'm not keen on fizzy beer and carb my beers to 5g/L and my mini kegs at 4g/L

Yes I normally go for 5g/L in IPAs and pale ales which is why I thought 2.5g/L seemed a bit low, but this one seems to make me feel a bit blown up.
