Hello,

I'm Kris. I'm a final year vocal student at Birmingham Conservatoire.

I've recently become quite interested in home brewing but am a little stuck for where to start.

I've made about 20 litres or so of ginger beer, quite successfully. But obviously it is a very simple recipe and i'm just wondering now where I can move on from this without spending too much money on expensive equipment?

Looking forward to learning lots and hopefully yielding some nice homebrew!

Hi Kris,

I've just joined here tonight myself & this is also my first posting .... I'm just down the road from you in Solihull! :thumb:

I've been brewing for just a few months & tbh I've made loads of brews in that time.

I started off making Pear Cider as I have a Pear Tree in my back garden. It was a lot better than I had hoped & went down well with family & friends.
Since then I've visited a local Birmingham Brewing Shop in Hall Green that has helped me with my selections & advice.

If you want to brew cheaply, then you'd do well to try the many brew kits that are about.

I've found the Brewmaker kits particularly good as they ferment easily at normal room temperature compared to some other makes.

I've done Lagers, Milds, Pear Cider, Red & White wine all from kits.

All complete within 5 - 7 days & are drinkable within 10 days.

Beer kits work out at around 25p per pint! :drunk:
Wines are around £1 per bottle! :P

Hope this helps?

Regards

Hi GreenPesto,

If only I had a pear tree! I currently make do with a little greenhouse on my balcony! And was able to grow quite alot of my own produce last summer, and still have some black berries and goji berries (May follow by your example and incorporate some of these into my homebrew! - I already used some of my Chilli to give my Ginger Beer a kick) !!

I'm in Solihull quite a bit as I sing with the two Am-dram societies Solihull Theatre Company and Solihull Operatic, I have the lead role in SOS' production of West Side Story coming up at the arts centre next may! (PLUG).

Anyway, back to the brewing! I am yet to visit the shop in Hall Green... bussing it with Demijohns is a little inappropriate I feel. However, my dad has just rung me to say a homebrew shop has just opened at the top of my parents street in Bradford, West Yorkshire. So i'm sure I will be getting some supplies this Christmas!

As for projects, this week I am going to attempt a simple 'Vimto Cider', I think I can probably get this going quite easily! Have you tried anything like this?

Cheers for the warm welcome Evanvine!

The shop in Hall Green is one of a chain of 3 in the Birmingham area so you may find one nearer to you.

Online shops are good too.

If not, I've noticed that even the Wilkinsons chain do a small range of homebrew products.

I'm off now to get another Mild kit to brew as I seem to get asked for it from friends & neighbours a little too often at the moment so it's running out very quickly!

:hmm: .... Another Red Wine kit also beckons!

I've just realised they do Free delivery from their online shop at http//www.brewgenie.co.uk/ when over £30 to anywhere in the Birmingham post-codes too! By their own delivery service... Problem solved.

Any suggestions?
