Grainfather Electric Grain Mill

I made the decision to start ordering grain uncrushed, I mean why not.
I decided to go with the GF Electric Mill with bamboo board as it is compact and I reckon fairly effortless to use.

I was going to buy from MM but they were out of stock which forced me to shop around and I found it for £249.95 which was £50 cheaper anyway.

The hopper is small, I knew this having watched a few YT Videos but I think that will be fine as it should chomp through 4 to 5 Kgs in no time.

I will be trying it out for the first time on my next brew in a week or so.

I have one and love it. My best brewing purchase so far, especially compared to my old Bulldog mill which was horrendous!

I have a purple scoop that I use to pour my grain into the hopper pretty consistently and it gets through it in no time.

Glad to hear you are happy with it, does it move much on top of the bucket? I can't wait for brew day now. I also have a scoop though mine is green

Nah the bucket stays still. The grain tends to settle at one side and if you have a big grain bill and aren’t paying attention you can flood the rollers, but you just need to make sure you tap and/or shake the bucket whilst milling.

I love my GF grain mill. Yes the hopper is small, but I have never found that to be an issue. It holds about 1 Kg grain which is fine for me. My grain bills are generally 4-6 Kg.

Cheers, yes on Youtube there were some criticisms of the hopper size but having seen how quick it goes through I cannot see an issue, I don't think as yet I ever had a grain bill much over 5Kgs

Can I ask why you moved away from buying crushed grain?

The main reason I moved from buying crushed grain is that I suffered a lot of stuck mashes on my system that I eventually traced to grain crush size. By crushing my own grain I have eliminated them.

I suppose as well that by crushing grain on a brew day, your grain is fresher - although I can't say I have noticed an appreciable difference in my beers since I started crushing grain myself.

Well, after the recent thread about using old grain but not because of it, I was browsing the subject on the web. I have never wanted a humongous mill cluttering the place up but this caught my eye and as I needed to order a little grain I decided to convert to milling my own.
Unfortunately I forgot that my two brewery sources where I buy my base malt in 25kg sacks only sell it crushed. So now I need to find another local brewery that uses un-crushed grain or pay MM prices and willing to sell it to me.
I do have a lot of small breweries quite local to me though so all hope is not lost.

Yeh I reckon you're right, lots more convenient for them that way especially in the bulk they use.

They do, but to compare, Geterbtrewed charge 34.89 for 25kgs uncrushed Simpsons MO, Malt Miller charge 43.16 each.
MM is off weighed a little as they only charge 5.64 to deliver the 2 sacks whereas Geterbrewed is 11.25
Making it 83,23 for Geterbrewed or 91.96 for MM

If going for crushed Geterbrewed is 86.77 and MM is same as above.

£34.89 is a good price for Simpsons MO Yesterday I paid €47or £39.61 for a 25kg sack... mind you I suppose they had to get it here first. I cannot buy from the UK anymore far too complex and costly. I used to buy lots of stuff from the UK per Brexit!

I guess it is, I have had the luxury of paying £20 for 25kgs from a local brewery for the last few years so it's a bit of a hike in price, but as it lasts me quite a long time it won't hurt too much.

I think charging for crush is a bit rich. If you buy it wholesale there is no difference in the price.

In real terms malt has to be just about the cheapest ingredient in brewing so best to pay

I would have thought it was and has always been part of the service I personally also think it's a bit rich and I will not be using them, I am all for trying to make a buck but it smacks of charging existing customers extra
