A corona one, tbh it isn't great quality but does the job..

If I had the money I would rethink things and get one of the larger ones

i love the idea of a mill, (shiny)but cant really justify it, ive said next christmas if i get my brewing right, not working out to well at the mo,

Milling grain is something that can help improve things such as efficiency and of course milling the grain fresh means its as fresh crush as you can get but apart from efficiency which can of course make a difference if your effieincys down it wont stop if something is failing..

what aspect do you feel is failing??

You're on walsgrave right? well your just down the road from me so I know the water is good even without treatments

I'm kind of thinking of getting one of the bulldog style ones after xmas

Do you have a mill now? I think the bulldog style is worth it

dont get me wrong the corona is okay, it does teh job .. I just find it a bit arkward because the quality isn't great great at clamping in and some grain flies out..a bulldog over a fermenter would work better

Yeah , I think I was one of them who suggested it could be that..

I did Greg hughes ESB, was okay but not bowled over by it myself.. The recipe can make a huge difference.

Maybe try some smaller batches, less risk if a batch goes bad

Im sure yo'll get there

Maybe we could bottle swap one day

id appreciate a second opinion, if you dont know what your doing wrong then you keep on doing it..
havent had a chance to brew lately as we decided it would be a brilliant idea to start decorating a month before christmas

Fair enough well maybe in the new year we could arrange something if it suits :thumb:

Brewed a Doom Bar clone last night...probably won't turn out anything like the original!

Target OG: 1.037
Target FG: 1.006
ABV: 4%
IBU: 22

3.5kg Pale Ale Malt
0.3kg Crystal 100 EBC
0.05kg Black malt
2g Northdown 60min
2g Northern Brewer 60min
2g Perle 60min
18g Northdown 0mins (steeped 30mins before chilling)
18g Northern Brewer 0mins (steeped 30mins before chilling)
18g Perle 0mins (steeped 30mins before chilling)
Pitched Wyeast London Ale taken from previous brew

For the 5th brew in a row I missed my OG target, this time by 4 points! Sparge was ridiculously quick again so I think it is to do with the crush of the grains, it could just be coincidence but my poor efficiency has coincided with switching to ordering 1kg bags of grain rather than 25kg sacks which I thought would improve efficiency not make it work! I mashed at 64c but I'm skeptical that would have extracted enough fermentable sugars to hit 1.006 so I wouldn't be surprised if I only hit 3% ABV! I really need to sort out these efficiency problems, they're really getting on my nerves! I've contacted my grain supplier and the Grainfather manufacturers to get their take on the problem. Annoyingly, I've already got the grains for my next brew so if it does turn out to be grain related I'm going to have another brew with poor efficiency although I'll probably combat that by adding some LME.

Anyway, enough whinging! I know doom bar is meant to be fermented very warm but I couldn't bring myself to brave setting my fridge over 22c.

Sorry for butting in!
Is this for a 23l batch?
I really fancy doing a 11.5l batch
Any help be appreciate.
Sorry my learning difficulties are doing my heed in lol

Hi Bri!

Yes it will be for 23L.
I am curious about 6g of hops being boiled for 60 mins and will revert after I have researched.

Well, it does appear that Doom Bar is made by using a very small proportion of the hops at the start (5% to 15%) and the rest after the boil.
Only other suggestion is that the recipe could be for 20L

The Malt Miller does a not very similar clone brew for 23L and you could just use half first time and half the second?

I suspect it looks like a bitter in colour and tastes like a lager. Never had one myself.

It was for 23l but it's also absolutely crap so I wouldn't recommend anyone follows this recipe!

Well this has turned out crap, can't put my finger on what is wrong with it but it isn't nice at all.

Sounds just like the Doom Bar I had at 'spoons recently. (Don't like the stuff).
