I'm looking for info on how to precondition my grain before I mill them and what specific effects preconditioning has apart from keeping the grain more intact after milling. Cheers:hat:

Steaming the grains before crushing to achieve a fine crush whilst keeping the husks more intact

I used this technique. It worked well although I didn't find any significant differences with my BIAB system.

No steam needed, just a spray bottle.

I was hoping preconditioning might help stop my Grainfather getting bunged up with **** and stopping the pump from working the chiller

Unless your crush is too fine (which would probably cause a stuck sparge) I doubt it'll be the grain blocking the filter, more likely hops if you're using pellets without a spider or hop socks?

I have a 300 micron hop spider it's not hops. It's grain husks that seem to be clogging the filter up. I could probably build something better than the Grainfather myself.

Grain conditioning could definitely help. When I tried it it left the husks in much better shape, so I think it would provide a better launter in most systems. As I BIAB it doesn't really seem to make much difference as I can just squeeze the **** out of the bag.

I gave up after a couple of goes as I it was adding 15 minutes to an already long process.

Give it a try and see if it helps.
