"The preparation of beer is called brewing" - technical stuff from the Daily Mail there

Not sure what the story has got to do with beer except that barley is used amongst other things for making beer and a geneticaly modified disease resistant barley might help to keep prices down...

If you believe that then you'll believe in anything

Farmers get paid little for the grain.
We pay lots for the grain.
Somewhere in between there is a happy fella sat on a mountain of pennies

How can you say "we pay a lot for grain" my grain cost approx 15p per pint.

And for the bad news for home brewing.......this year has seen the US crops of Maize all but fail which means other feed stuff will be used. Second on that list is wheat....which...... you guessed it...... has already had/is having a bad cropping season...so what will they be buying to feed the animals....you bet barley will be up there
And if you like chips with your beer....there's....wait for it........more bad news   Initial reports from this harvest suggest it's 40% down with another 15-20% expected to be lost from disease  ...and if you like a chip butty...forget it  I wonder how the hop harvest has done...bet it's not had a chance with all that rain
And on the bright side...I'll get me coat

But then again we dont pay a lot for anything, Barley, hops, yeast or water

Barley price index = Euro 201 per metric tonne = £163.20

Maris otter = £32 per 25kg (Or £12800 per metric tonne)

:wha:
these prices that you have quoted are for barley, not malted barley, nor have you taken distribution costs, suppliers profit into account. Your figures might be correct, but it still doesnt matter as I can brew a pint of beer for £0.16 (barley only)

Taking that into account the difference of approx £12600 per tonnne, I'm sure it doesnt cost that to malt and transport/store. As I said, somewhere there is someone sat on a pile of pennies

I would have thought that malting a whole tonne of barley would cost a fair amount including labour, factory space and energy for heating...
