With the recent price rises with Nottingham and S-04 I'm tempted to give Gervin a go....
Does anyone use this yeast, if so which one is best to replace Nottingham or S-04?

As far as I know Gervin is Nottingham re-packaged. I've used it a number of times and always has good results :thumb:

I've used the Gervin English Ale a few times with good results and have also heard that it's Notty in a different packet.

Yes Snail, there's also an assortment of wine yeasts under that name.

BB after reading a lot of your posts you seem to be like myself a Yorkshireman who only likes to spend if absolutely nessesary . Have you given any thoughts as to using liquid yeast ? . A little bit of prep time and a small area in the fridge to store splits can and does work out cheaper in the long run. I also think the finished products are better too . although that is my opinion others will disagree. Back on topic about Gervin i wasnt keen on it .

I used the Gervin once as it came with a kit I'd bought. It worked out quite well, but I've never used nottingham, so I can't really compare.

Hi Micky.F
I've done liquid yeasts in the past and even brewed with the Tim Taylor strain but I love the quickness of S-04 and Nottingham, and since finding out that loads of breweries use dried yeast I feel that if it's good for them, it's good for me. :thumb:

I agree the speed of those yeast and the convenience of them cannot be faultered i always keep a few sachets handy ,but find that WLP002 and 004 ( my favs at min) are just as quick but not as convenient .

Gervin is alright, can be a bit slow to ferment out but not a bad yeast. More like Notty than SO4

If was going to sugesst that to save money, why not but a 500g satchet from murphys. but at £50 for 500g thats still £1 per brew

If you can manage your yeast properly, its not that hard to do, there is a post somewhere by wolfy on the other forum that goes into detail using jam jars and cooled boiled water, if done properly liquid will be better and no slower to use than dried, and the benifit is you can keep it going indefinitely if thorough.

Now did those south yorkshire ears prick up when you read the last line

Eh Up BB.
I did some brewery visiting recently whilst organising Dronfield Beer Festival and was supprised to see packets of s04 all over the place. Turns out that most micros use dried yeast now as it is alledgedly more consistant than liquid yeasts!! :hmm:

By the way the false bottom works a treat, fits my mashtun like a glove. Thanks again old boy

Hi Rob,
Glad the false bottom did the trick. :thumb:

How's the brewing coming along? I sold my 70L boiler and bought a 100L one. :D

The only reason dried yeasts are found to be more consistent is, the brewers are not capable of managing their yeast. It takes care and cleanliness and skill to keep those yeasties happy, its a mark of a great brewer who can do it.

I know saltaire brewery have been repitching the same yeast for the last 5 Years with no issues, they acid wash it every few brews but that's it afaiaa, and they must have reused that first pitch over 900 times by now, that's good yeast management for you.
