Hi guys

planning my second and third AG and want to move outside and use gas

I use a 50L SS pot from ebay Germany

I was looking at one of these two:
http://www.gasproducts.co.uk/acatalog/L ... tml#aHA316
http://www.gasproducts.co.uk/acatalog/L ... _Ring.html

can anyone suggest which one would be better.
would anyone have any recommendations for cheaper ones or is this a good deal?

finally, if I'm doing it outside, do I remember that people say it's important to think of a way to keep the wind away?

thanks

matthew

would go for the triple burner m8 looked into gas before deciding to go down the cheap kettle element route ,what i worked out from loss of heat and so forth the 8.8kw burner was what was required my pot was also 50ltr have a look on google or similar and you will find calculations for working out your BTU/KW lost and power required to boil a litre of water and energy lost to your surroundings and how quickly it will boil your water ,no point and buying a gas burner that takes 2hrs to boil your water,hope this helps :thumb: let me know what you choose pls

brought mine three weeks ago, spot on for the price, just check that there in stock first. the hose pipe is a 8mm fit to the burner unit valve, i went out and brought 4metres of 6mm pipe and a varible pressure regulator instead of the standard 32mb fixed pressure regulator, . it is designed to work with the fixed reg but i just have other uses for it and the extra oomph helps to kick things up a gear when i want it.

for a wind break we can use some thing as simple as in an outside wall corner out of the way of the wind, or buy four concrete blocks from some where to stack around it or a dozen bricks instead, for mine i have cut a section out of the middle of a metal fifty gallon barrel about a foot high and the lot just sits inside the ring

you def want the 2nd 1 as it will heat up your ss faster thus saving gas , mine is no1 which is good but i have a 33l ss pot so alls go for me

thanks guys. gonna buy this week. only have one more question- if I get the stronger one, won't I use more gas to heat the wort? I know it'll boil quicker, but won't it use more gas too?

considering the balance between gas used and time to reach boil, is the bigger burner still the best bet?

With 7.5kW you gonna wait much longer to boil, effectively wasting gas. With naked 50ltr pot (not insulated) it could take up to 60 mins to get 45ltr of wort @66C to boil.

thx- yeah hadn't thought about that. are there any type of calculators online to see rough estimates of time taken and gas used to boil certain amounts of liquid?

Hi matt,found this formula
Pt= (4.2x L x T /3600) Pt=power used to heat water, L = ltrs to be heated, T = temp difference ie start temp to finish temp c

example: heating 47 ltrs water from 15c to 100c
Pt=4.2x47x(100-15)/3600 Pt= 4.66

calculate time to it takes to heat water by dividing the power used (Pt =4.66) with the rating of heating element (8.8kw)
the calculation would be 4.66/8.8 = 0.53hrs = approx 32mins to heat 47 litres water from 15c to boiling point
possibly a little longer for wort as the mass of 4.2 for water would be different for wort.

thnks for this. somehow i missed your post!

one concern i noticed this morning as i was about to order, was on the more expensive one theres a height gap between the flame and where the pot would be. this gap is much smaller on the cheaper one

would this be a factor to consider?

I would go for the square one for 2 reasons.
First its a more stable platform for a large pot the triangular one looks dodgy!
2nd IMHO a burner is a burner its the regulator that humps the gas out of the tank so a better regulator will do the job.
Both mine are rated at 8.8kw and i can get around 30 ltrs upto boil in around 20 mins no problems - i have mine shielded in my BBQ housing which is solid brick so not much wind affects it.
Not had a problem with mine at all so far. good luck. :cheers:
