Hi Guys

As a bit of a novice to artificial pressurisation (1 cornie brew to my name) and in ned of a refil for my gas. I was considerring getting mixed gas rather than CO2. I just wondered if you guys could share your opinions/experince re the pros/cons of nitrogen mix gasses as opposed to pure CO2.

cheers & ttfn benm

p.s. This is a slight cross post from an item in JBK - I dont know how you guys feel about that sort of thing. I know in my software forums a lot af admin get all shirty - but you dont seem the shirty types (programmers should drink more beer)

If you switch to mixed gas you need higher pressures to carbonate . . . using a 50:50 mix you need 100% higher pressure to carbonate . . . this may create a problem for dispense . . . . I've stuck with CO2, but If I was going for wine on tap I would go with 70:30 mixed gas

I used both in the past twelve months and i felt that the mixed gas did no favours for hop flavour. There is a certain amount hop hop taste lost to a cornie but i felt with the mixed gas, the problem was exaggerated. I'll be sticking with c02 in the future ;)

I use mixed gases for diving, not sure about beer.

I currently have mixed gas and Co2 in use on my cornies.

I have an account with a pub gas suppliers and there was some advantage in getting a second cylinder (long story) I have tried the mixed gas in ale and in stout.

I agree with MEB, it is not kind to hop flavours and also does not give a pleasant mouth feel....Works OK in stout though and I suspect it would be even better in a true Guinness clone (which mine isn't.)

When the cylinder is empty I'll probably swap it for another Co2 cylinder (I don't drink that much stout.)
