Gas burner for boiler pan - patio gas w' push/clip-on regulator ok..?!

Hi all,

Most of the query is right there in the title, but to add a little - I'm looking at getting a gas burner for faster boiling etc. I've seen majority sell with the regs that screw into the larger 'red' propane bottles but I'm wondering if I'd be able to use a clip-on reg with the smaller calor patio gas bottle I've already got for the bbq?

The swapping out / re-fitting of regs I'm familiar with (setup a few bbq's in my time :-)) so the query is not so much around the how-to of setting up a regulator, cutting hose, jubilee clips etc etc. I'm quite sure its all physically doable, but more in terms of different pressures these regulators can deal with or not, and the requirements of these homebrew gas buners (so, effecting heat intensity / etc..?) I'm not so familiar with

Hey Mik, you need to provide enough gas to the burner, the size required for a 7.5kw is 37mbar or 1.5kg per hour. You can do less but the burner won't be as powerful and in my experience, depending on the size of kettle, you need the full power.

Given the respective prices, wouldn't you be much better converting your barbecue to run on the red propane bottles, since patio gas is inexplicably more expensive for the same gas?

Hi Brewnaldo, yes probably a good point! which I'll look into for sure. Currently I've got a full tank of the smalled patio gas though and keen to do a boil pretty soon so just curious if I can utilise this same bottle for a brew burner
