Wife has been asked if she can cover a shift next Saturday for a colleague who has injured herself and could be off w**k for a few weeks :(

That shift would be worth a respectable amount of dosh, which we need having yesterday bought and insured a small car for our son :shock:

She was reluctant to accept that shift, as next Saturday is my birthday .... bless.

I've told her to get out and earn some extra money, and I can get a brew on while she's out :D

I've just done a stock check and have:

6kg pale malt
400g dark crystal
350g caramalt
300g black
125g choc
350g terrified wheat, but I don't think I like that

100g Bramling X - but it seems that quite a few members don't like those
70g Aurora
70g Goldings
40g Pilgrim
35g EKG
25g Bobek
25g First Gold
10g Challenger

Come on guys, make me a recipe to fill 2 Cornelii :party:

Brewing mathematicians, a bit of help here please guys:

I'm trying to get my head around things like the forum batch sparge calculator and what you can get out of a given weight of grain.

Dunfie has told me that there's a laboratory maximum which you can get out of grain, expressed in Litre Degrees per Kilogram and I've found a list of LDK values here.

Dunfie said that the calculation is OG = Grain in KG x LDK Value / Brew Length, and then to multiply that OG by brewhouse efficiency, but I think I can factor in the efficiency on either side

I like malty, dark beers but don't want to break into my new sack of grain until I've used up some of the older oddments, so what I'm thinking of is:

6kg pale malt
250g dark crystal
250g pale oat malt
125g chocolate
125g caramalt

If I say pale 305 LDK, crystal & cara 275 LDK and oat & choc 260 LDK that's:
(6 x 305) + (0.375 x 275) + (0.375 x 260) = 2030

Assuming 75% efficiency that gives me 0.75 x 2030 = 1522.5

OG = 1522.5 / Length

I want a low gravity brew this time around, say 1.042

Length = 1522 / 42 = 36.25 litres ???

I haven't decided on hops yet but have also now got Centennial for the Spring Thing brew, Cascade and more Challenger.

The Bramling-X were an impulse purchase from my LHBS, probably grade ‘b’, unknown origin, loose packed, only a vague AA range of 5-7% and I haven't yet tried them.

I am reluctant to use an untested hop in a two keg brew.
