Bottled my first brew on Saturday after having fitted a Little Bottler myself onto a FV to use as a bottling bucket. The tap leaked, but I had the rubber seal on the inside - is this wrong or do I need to buy myself a new bucket with tap fitted?

Seal generally goes on outside of vessel.

Need to get myself a little bottler actually, can't be doing with all this siphon tap/pinch valve bobbins any more, not with the volumes I'm bashing out

It should seal on either side tbh but most put it on the outside. You can buy extra rubber washers, thy don't cost much but they do give you double protection, and for the cost of a full brew well worth it IMO.

My Little bottler came with 2 washers I put one on the outside 1 on the inside. If you've only got one the best place for it should be on the inside as the pressure of the beer behind it will help it keep the seal. On the outside any pressute behind it would work towards loosening the seal.

I've been fooling around with my bottling bucket and find that it leaks whether I have the washer inside or outside. Someone somewhere suggested a dab of vaseline might help the seal so I'm going to try that with the washer on the outside.

The leak is just a very slight seepage, though, so I don't suppose it's likely to do much harm to the beer if I get bottling straight away after transferring.

If the hole is cut too close to the bottom of the vessel, the plastic walls may not bend enough to make a good seal. Something to check.

Might sound stupid but is the thread all the way in? First time I put mine on I thought it was fully on. I had a very slight leak so pushed it a bit harder and it popped in more the last bit of thread must have caught when I pushed it in.

I'll try it with the seal on the outside. Does the stick from the Little Bottler fit on standard taps if I need a new one?

I will double check when I get home just in case but I'm pretty sure it is in OK. It is just a tiny amount of seepage and only when the FV is quite full so I should be OK for bottling.

From an engineers point of view the reason the washer is best on the outside is that if its on the Inside as you tighten the nut it will deform the washer hence causing a leak. And as for vaseline, a bit of lubricant on any moving part is always a good idea.

If the washer is on the inside then liquid can leak along the thread. A washer on the outside seals the only place liquid can leak out.

I did have everything set up correctly so refitted with a little Vaseline on the washer on the outside of the bucket. It is now fine with 21 litres of water in it and no seepage!
