Hello all
Just got in from a night shift,the highlight being..I had a different work partner who told me about his recent new kitchen and appliances....and that his wife insisted on a new larder fridge and how is old one,in fine condition ,was now cluttering up his garage waiting to go to the skip.....I said I could shift it for him...he said. ..help yourself!

I love both recycling and free so definitely a "Win-WIn" for all concerned! :thumb: :thumb:

No need to overdo the heating. I find one of these is adequate ...

... and we can only dream about it getting warm enough to need the refrigeration side of things!

BTW, when you get the fridge home DO NOT start it until it has been sat in an upright position for at least 24 hours! :nono: :nono: :nono:

Failure to do this may very well result in the compressor seals being blown as the compressor tries to compress liquid refrigerant.

Being impatient I took the liberty to go and get my free fridge this evening..and dropped him a bottle..
Wires crossed on my part I thought it was the taller version but shelves out,the fv fits in with room for an airlock if required.
I think I'll build a small stand for it to save my back..just won't go on top of my small freezer as there's a shelf in the way. .
I'll start setting it up tomorrow. ..time for a beer!

Right I'm new to brewing and just doing kits at the moment but I also have a spare fridge as we got a new one at Christmas and thinking I can turn it into something for brewing but what is the benefits?

Brilliant! I suggest that you build a small shelf as per my photo 'cos those glass ones aren't designed to take an FV filled with 23 litres of wort!

Also, I suggest a blow-off bottle rather than an air-lock. Alternatively, you can wait until the wort comes to visit and then think "I wish I had fitted a blow-off system!"

The joy of a fridge is the you use a lot less power to keep it warm when fermenting and can actually drop the temperature when "cold crashing" or "lagering" and in all events you get better temperature control.

Cheers Dutto..looks like what I had in mind. I've got plenty of wood..oooeerr to build a shelf for the fv....I'm going to raise the fridge up too . Seen a tube heater in tool station so might get it all done tomorrow...I'll set it up and leave it running then put a brew in it between my days to nights. .yes the blow off tube is the safer option!

It's a standard undercounter fridge. I wonder why it looks like you chaps' fermenters fit much better?

Some have fermented in a standard UN water container, but they must be a nightmare to clean.

That sort of thing would be ideal. You're right though, it is pricey. Maybe just go for a plastic Jerry can from ebay.

Is it a "larder fridge"?

If you have a "freezer fridge", it's amazing how much room that little compartment takes up!

Plus, I can't fit an airlock on top of my FV (which is another reason why I use a blow-off system) so it isn't all that "roomy"! :thumb:

It's got no ice box. Just a standard undercounter fridge. My FV fits but it's a squeeze. Not so much in height, but in diameter. As for as I'm aware it's not a slimline fridge either.

The pictures from other posters make it look like their FVs fit comfortably.

I use a 40w one of both my kegerator (2m high with 6 cronies) and fermentation fridge (1.6m high). It's more than capable of heating them in a garage at 10 degrees C.

I used the 40w Screwfix one for my larder fridge. It's been fine in the cold weather we've had lately and it's in my unheated shed.

Lowest option gives approx 5 inches the next about 8..

I use the original wire rack on it's lowest option. It more or less sits on the lump at the back that sticks out where the compressor is. The tube heater, I've fixed to the door, it just swings under the wire rack when the door shuts. Not had a problem yet. Probably less than 5" clearance, but the heat rises up through the rack.
I also fitted a PC fan to circulate the air a bit.
