Hi I started my first attempt at a wurzles orange wine today.
It's only my 3rd brew in total. Anyway rookie mistake, but I didn't rinse demiJohn before starting. It's fermenting away nicely, but Should I put it down to experience and empty out and start again, or will it be ok to drink. Not too bothered about losing the brew as it's just a couple of cartons of juice so no great expense, but don't want to go too all the effort of racking and bottling to find its undrinkable.

Give it a little taste and if it tastes of chlorine then throw it away. I know what you mean by you don't mind wasting the small amount of money invested, but you don't want to waste the time invest soon with racking and bottling.

I made a massive rookie mistake on my first big batch last year. Had 10 DJs to bottle, so trying to save time, I filled the bath with hot water, put far too much VWP in, and stuck half the bottles in overnight (and the rest in the morning). I took the lids off the bottles thinking I could soak the labels off and sanitise them inside at the same time. The labels didn't soak off and still needed scraping. Because I used too much VWP a fair few of the bottles weren't washed out thoroughly enough and the wine tastes of chlorine, and the majority of the bottles have small bits of labels in them. Moral of the story, take your time to wash the bottles in small batches!

Just realised I wrote a bit of an essay, wasn't ment to, just got carried away talking about VWP.

I have always thought the same about VWP, swear by it as a cleaner but always worried what would be the effect if I didnt rinse enough, I tend to wash out each bottle 3 times after sterilising, is this too much?

Ha ha. Makes my mistake insignificant. Will taste when I get home from work later and decide what to do then. Cheers

I have been using Milton (or equivalent) as my steriliser for the last couple of years and it works well.

Wait until it is finished and Chuck in a crushed campden tablet that may remove any chlorine substances that are left after about 5 minutes.

deffo worth trying

Yeah thanks again for replys. Just tasted but all I'm getting at the moment is sweet orange flavour. So will let it continue and chuck a Campden tablet in at the end and see how I get on.
