Hi Folks,

Just bought myself a starter kit from Edina Home Brew here in Edinburgh and got started yesterday evening. Woke up this morning to the sounds of my Coopers Sparkling Ale fermenting away

Totally new to all of this and already itching to my second kit!

My hydrometer reading last night was 1035 - I've been reading about 1044. Should I be concerned? I used a pack of enhancer rather than sugar.

At the moment I have a plastic keg for it to go in to. I take it I don't need to add CO2 to it? There's a valve at the top.

My wife has been constantly rolling her eyes since I got started. Probably didn't help that she was up first this morning and thought that the bubbling in the kitchen was coming from a blacked sink!

Thanks, David.

Hello David and welcome,
If your OG (original gravity reading) is lower than expected, you will just get a beer that is not quite as strong. I would not worry as it's your first brew. Experience counts for a lot.
As for your Keg/Barrel, Yes you will need to pump some co2 in it at kegging time.
Do you know which type of valve it has got.?
You need to put some gas in, Wait ten mins for the co2 to push the existing air to the top of the keg. Release the lid to let the air out and then put some more co2 in.
Oh and there's nothing like winding the wife up

Welcome to the forum Dave

It will only get worse mate. It must have something to do with Celt women. My other half is Cornish and she hasn't stopped rolling her bloody eyes for 12 years  .

Cheers Neil

Thanks for the reply!

You can find a pic of the valve here:

I'll pop back to Edina and pick some CO2 up.
