Well a few hours ago it started bubbling away merrily. Yeah I think I may need to relocate it to a cooler cupboard as I really don't fancy fruity lager

Don't apply any heat to the FV for the first 2/3 days as the yest kicking off will generate its own heat. My FV sits in my kitchen so most of the time it will maintain a fermentable temperature due to the central heating and with us cooking. I do have temperature control and it's usually through the night or during the day when the house is empty that it kicks in. With an insulated FV in a kitchen and a 3 week ferment your beer should hit the FG you're after.

just taken my first gravity reading after 7 days..it's showing up as 1011. i couldn't help myself so i tasted the sample in the tube. it certainly has no fruity tang and almost tastes the part sort of lol

Good.
Now leave it alone for at least another 7 days for the fermentation to finish and the yeast to clean up and then start to drop to give you clear beer for packaging.
