First kit: When might I see bubbles?

Today is day 7 of the brew so I am going to take a hydrometer reading. Although the fermentation didn't give the impression of being vigorous there is some noticeable white sediment on the bottom so something must have happened!

If I just run some of it out of the tap into a tall hydrometer glass, and will discard it after taking the reading, I don't need to sanitise anything. Am I right about that?

spot on mate , thats the best way to do it :thumb: then leave it be till tomorrow and take another reading , only if same reading (unless still high) will it be ready

Thanks mate, I think I'll soon be bottling my first homebrew!
It is reading between 1.004 and 1.006 - it's a bit tricky to get the reading at the start because there are lots of bubbles around the hydrometer (I think it was about 1.004). I also left it in the jar for a while until it was more 'flat' and then the reading was about 1.006
Will repeat tomorrow.

if you leave it for a while remember to spin the hydrometer to get the bubbles off it so the reading is more accurate :thumb:

Thanks for the tip. I've got a reading of about 1.005 today. Is that close enough a reading to yesterday's 1.006 (given the accuaracy levels that are achievable) to say it's ready to bottle?

if its been round about the same reading for 2-3 days a dont think it will drop to much further unless the readings are higher than what is stated in the instructions ie 1020-1022 and the FG final gravity should be 1006 what i mean is if its a high FG then it could be a stuck fermentation in which case there are plenty of threads to help you out but 1005 sounds good to me hope thats explained ok :hmm: and i havent confused it to much :thumb:

+ 1 for that , also you dont want a brew to be too low as water is 1000 and you don't wish your brew to be thin (high starting beers with a gravity of say 1070 finish high say 1018 cuz its a heavy brew)

Thanks for that. The kit instructions said under 1008 so I was ok at 1006ish for 2 consecutive days.

All the advice in this thread has been really helpful as I've produced my first kit - cheers to all.

Glad to say it has been in bottles for 5 days now. I did have some problems with bottling though. The little bottler attachment didn't fit the tap I had on my fermentation bucket (should have bought that before I started!) so I risked it and filled directly into the bottles trying to avoid splashing. Only in a week or so will I know if I've ruined my beer with oxidisation I suppose. Fingers crossed!
