After about 35 years of brewing, having brewed just about every type of country wine in the book, the only 2 that I now frequently brew are Raisin Sherry, and Blackberry wine - 1 batch of each every year. I got fed up of drinking overly sweet, overly dry, or just bad tasting junk that melted the enamel off your teeth.......anyone else feel the same?

We always found the 1 litre red grape juice to 1.5 litre apple juice a decent tasting, quick and cheap wine but I haven't made any for a while as we found The Range Store make your own wines made by Muntons and at £20 there didn't seem much point in messing about with the supermarket juice any more as it wasn't any cheaper.

I'm hoping to start a port next week with one of those red wine kits, but add about 10-15 litres of asda pure red grape juice 5kg blackberries 5 kg cherries to ensure its very tasteful even after whacking it up to 20%ish

I think also even slightly cheaper brew2bottle website do kits for about £18 and are about the same but more variety than the range

20 litres of Port.... I thought I drank a lot.......!!!

On the super wine yeast point,Its good stuff but the "added nutrient" isnt really that much at all.
It helps a bit but is nowhare near close to an overdose.

Too much nutrient can leave an almost salty taste but you need an awfull lot to get to that point.
These high alcohol kits contain a far higher level of nutrient.

May just be a placebo brain effect of what have you, but im always sure I can taste a metallic type taste in ones where I used to stick extra in

So, while I had all the gear out and 3 empty DJs ......

3 more lots on 😂 same base for each, RG and Apple.

More Apple + 700g Sugar, OG 1092

Tropical Juice Drink + 760g Sugar, OG 1090

Cranberry drink + 760g Sugar,
OG 1088

I did the usual adding up the sugar in the fruit juices, but this time reduced the sugar by 40g. My starting gravities on the first 3 were all quite high, but this time they are looking better. Strong wine is all very well but I don't want to be asleep after the 1st two glasses 😂
Just started reading through this thread and noticed something in the post above. Juices that contain the word 'Drink' in their title are very unlikely to be pure fruit and are likely to contain artificial sweeteners that will not ferment and may leave you with a sickly sweet wine.

If its not 100% juice its not really much good for wine making as the juice content of the carton is usually below 50% and sometimes a lot lower.

Yep agreed. But the heart of the wine is a litre each of Red Grape and Apple, both 100% juice.

I think someone advocated 2.5 litres of 100% juice. I've gone with 3 litres, 2 of 100% and 1 litre of drink.

See what happens 😊

Hmmm:> Fruit "Drink" does seem to catch a lot of members out.
I have answered many queries over the past few years When folk have mistaken drink for juice.
It needs to be pure 100% juice with NO added preservatives,Especialy no pot sorbate.

Since Colin`s wines are mainly fruit juice i think he will be ok on that front.

I checked the labels of the "drinks" that I used and chose only those that had no preservatives and also those that had use within 4-5 days from opening.

I hadn't considered artificial sweetners and the cartons have gone now, so I guess time will tell.

Artificial sweetners are fine,Its the preservatives (sorbate) thats the problem.

In your case if the gravity has gone down as expected you will be ok.

Its just that a lot of members are fooled by the "drink" lable thinking its fruit juice as the packaging is so similar.

That was me in the supermarket juice wine thread, the standard recipe was only one litre of each juice.

Now -

1 litre red gtape juice

1. 5 litre apple juice

So is the rest you add water? I must have made every supermarket juice and I've always used 5litres pure 100% juice whatever juice it may be mixed n matched etc.. should I be saving money? I've had good reviews
