first bottle bin raid

I have managed to collect a few bottles of my own too, I find hat the magners original bottles delable really easily as do sainsburys taste the diff ale bottles, I only need a few more to make up my magic number of 50 ready to bottle, I also just bought some videne from the local chemist and she aske for a sample once brewed so that's another on I need o get.

as im still not drinking i picked up 2 packs of Bavaria alc free so thats another 12 bottles for £4 :grin:

I've been going round to my nearest Tesco's bottle bin every Thursday, they get emptied on a Friday morning

Had to make do with green this time because the brown glass bin wasn't full enough to reach! My current batch is Coopers Euro Lager so I guess it fits!

Having a bit of a nightmare finding wine bottles that aren't screwtop tho!

Not wishing to rain on your parade but Wychwood bottles prove notoriously difficult to cap with a twin lever capper :electric:

Sainsburys often have the same deal on for Black Sheep Ale (and many other ales too, but Black Sheep labels come off really easily).

Not had any problems capping them using a hammer-on capper, so they are not completely useless, just not as versatile as you might have hoped.

found out that one of my local landlords is a bit of a homemade chutney and jam buff, i dropped off a jar of my Cherry Jam and Picallilly, he saves Magner and Koppaberg bottles, as many as I want. I got 150 in a weekend!!!

I've always struggled with the idea of hitting a glass bottle with a hammer but given the sacrifices I've made to get the 50 bottles (25 litres of Hobgoblim was such a struggle :whistle: ) I'll give it a go :)

Oh if only funds would allow, a bench capper is a month's supply of beer :drink: , hammer... glass... what could possibly go wrong. On the plus side, casualty is at the end of my road :mrgreen:

Yep. I started with a two-handed capper, was quite hard work, always had to do each cap twice to be confident, and snapped a neck once, scary.
Actually felt safer with the hammer-on, using rubber mallet and newspaper under bottle for slight cushioning effect.
But then got bench capper, cried with joy first time I used it (well nearly)

Right, hammer on capper it is then. I did float the idea of switching bottles and drinking 50 bottles of Black Sheep as suggested earlier but Mrs Zal was not entirely supportive of the idea. At this point I decided discretion was the better part of valour and concluded that now was not the time to broach the subject of a bench capper... apparently children need food, water and shoes (never mind Daddy's requirement for beer ... the youff of today have no consideration!)

I use my hammer on capper on a tiled floor with a claw hammer. I do, however, fold a rag into at least 8 layers under the bottles. So far I have had 1 out of around 150 break on me, and that was not spectacular, there was just a slightly odd noise and then a hissing sound as beer oozed from the crack round the base.
I totally agree that hammering a glass bottle feels deeply wrong, especially given how hard you need to do it to get any pace going in your bottling. One day, I too will own a bench capper. First I must cleanse the cellar into a suitably beer-friendly area. Then I need to fit a bench. Then... then... then...

well i messaged 4 of my not so local pubs (out in the sticks) and one has got back to me saying i can help myself to there bottles bins when ever i like. so thats a turn up for the books dont think im going to be short of bottles any time soon :party:
just got to find some time to do see what i can get and find out when they get the bin emptied as not much point going after
