HI everyone ,made up a finlandia kit 12 hours ago but no yeasty foam or anything has started yet, is this normal ? i only ask as i done an AR kit my first kit i may add couple weeks ago and it foamed up straight away nearly , so might it take few days for something to happen or maybe add more yeast? advanced thanks

Hi, i made the same kit a few weeks ago, im pretty new to it all,but i have noticed that the kits seem to be less violent when it comes to fermenting, and in some cases barely any froth/foam at all. i would not add any extra yeast. I have tried a 'on the rocks'apple cider recentley, and there was barely any froth/foam at all, just a bit of fizz, but it had done its job within the week Have you checked the temp, between 18-25 is what your after, if you have a hydrometer check if the gravity has changed since you started, this should tell you if things are working. If you havent got a hydrometer, i would advise you to get one, makes things a whole lot easier, and you can work out the abv% pretty easily. As for the finlandia if its the pear and apple cider, it is quite nice, very sweet, with a bit of a goldensyrup/honey taste to it. I thinks its a good summer barbecue drink, theres nothing to dislike about it, however if your uses to a dryer cider, u may think its a bit 'soft'. i dont think it would go down too well at a scrumpy party, i fear you would be lynched

thanks very much for your reply anjo ,pleased too hear they dont react like the ale kits, was starting too think id messed up ,after your post i took lid of fv no foam or froth just alittle fizzle for few seconds, placed hydrometer in ,cant b 100% about reading find them tricky to read but think it has moved slighty from original, will b keeping close eye on it ,would you advise giving it a stir?or just leave few days to see if hydrometer starts to drop? sorry to be sounding like a nob but this is all new to me just wanna get it right , hopeing its like the koppenberg which i find tasty ,suppose that would still get me lynched with the scrumpy brigade

I would not worry just yet. Give it another 12-18 hours and if no activity has started by then I would suggest you to prepare an yeast starter!

thanks for your reply alphacento ,things seem to be bang on going by hydrometer readings which i havnt mastered yet ,but it looked close to 150 at start now going close to 100 so im guessing i could be close too transfering to keg fingers crossed , im sure ill be back with more questions ,learning curve

glad its startd to kick off  taste wise, i wouldnt compare it to kopperburg,i was quite suprised by the taste, in a good way, its almost caramelish!!! if that makes sense, if your thinking of trying a new one, i personally would steer clear of the 'on the rocks' apple cider, you get a sachet of'back to apple' flavouring with the kit to add to brew once fermented, and it makes the drink taste quite chemically, ive just thrown about 30 pints down sink, as i couldnt drink anymore  , maybe it was somethin i did, but all my other kits have turned out fine. there is a ginger beer recipe going round the forum at the minute, and i have tried makin a gallon of it, and it is superb, and i recommend anyone to have a go at it. Ill be making a fukll bin of it next, but with about 50% more ginger, cos i like my throat to burn

in the barrel 2 days should be tasty by xmas ,caramelishy apple/pear sounds ok 2 me. sorry to hear bout the 30 pints down sink id b gutted also, i shall take your advice and stay clear off the on the rocks, nothing worst than finding out ;i told you so; ;) i will have alook at the ginger beer recipe its something ive been thinking about so thanks for that anjo ,gonna get a 3rd brew on the go soon havnt decided wat yet ,certainly becoming an obession just hoping it turns out proper
