Hi all,

I have bought finings for the first time (vin clear), and noticed the shop sold varius forms of finings including two part packets of liquid and on the shelf was a selection of finings in bottles. I think they were Youngs A, B, and C.

One of them may have been a powder?

Essentially i know nothing about finings, which is the best option for general purpose? I like the idea of the bulk bottles because they work out much cheaper but dont know if you need just one or all of them.

Anybody got any pointers? i have some stubborn cider that wont clear (pressed apple and a few wines I was hoping to have for xmas (they have finished but are a bit cloudy even in the cold garage)

Any pointers greatly recieved.

Vinclear is good, that's a one-shot isinglass finings and if you buy the liquid form in the bottle you use 1-2 caps to the gallon. It's also available in powder form, but I've never used that so I can't comment.

To me, the Young's liquid sachets seem expensive and are only really suited to clearing one large batch. I suppose you could try to split the contents across 2-3 smaller brews if you were treating them at the same time but I wouldn't like to try to hold any over for another day.

Personal preference: Ritchie's Quick-Clear :thumb:
Two small bottles in a green and white cardboard box and you need a small syringe to measure it out because the dosage really is tiny.

Another thumbs up for kwik clear. Get a 5 mil syringe to use with it, makes it really easy to get amounts right.

I've only used finings on one of my wines and it was Kwick Clear. I was amazed at how fast it worked. I'd normally just let it clear by itself though. They always do unless you've boiled the fruit.
