Hello All
I am just brewing a larger from a Brupacks kit and it says to "cover loosely" during fermentation, does this not need an airlock then? Should I just lay the lid on the top of the fermenting bucket? Should I block p the airlock hole? Is it ok for air to get into the Bucket?

Lots of questions

Airlock is fine, I normally leave the lid slightly off in one corner if the lid does not have a airlock fitted.

You don't need an airlock when fermenting lager, or any beer,

When beer ferments it produces CO2 (Carbon dioxide). CO2 is heavier than air so will sit on top of the brew in the fermentor forming a blanket.

There are people on this forum, me included who don't own airlocks and brew beer quite happily.

There are also people, including some large commercial breweries who don't even have lids on their fermenters.

Don't seal all the holes as lots and lots of CO2 will be produced and you don't want the pressure to build up inside the bucket.

The only thing you really need to avoid is things falling into the beer while it fermenting, it will do it no good at all if an inqusitive cat or small child falls in, actually fruit flys aren't great either so it is worth having some protection.

If you have an airlock, then use it, it won't do any harm, you will also have the pleasure of hearing it pop when the gas is released, assuming your lid seals properly. If you don't have one, just put the lid on, but not airtight, if there is a hole in the lid you might want to throw a clean T Towel over the top to keep the flys and rats out. :)

If there's a hole in the lid then you either need to fit an airlock or cover the hole.

If I want to ferment larger I just use two buckets.

As everybody has said you don't need an airlock, I haven't bothered with mine up until I did my cerveza (hole in the lid of the FV and I thought I would try it) It bubbled like a bugger and I can hear it upstairs... (note to self, get the carpet fitted)

Mightily impressive and quite enjoyable to watch the bubbles come out know that they all mean that your lager is becoming smashing!!

A larger what?
Whats it larger than?
I think I've already made that point.

BTW, if you want to join the pedants' club you will need to learn about apostrophes.

“What's it larger than?”

lol Moley, very true. (best check my grammar and language use from now on, make sure it is proper like!)

What do the 12 Apostles have to do with beer again???

Praise the LORD!

 < Happy Clapper hahahah

Sorry, no offence intended, your question had been answered before we went off at a tangent and the lager / larger issue does come up quite regularly.

non taken, silly mistake, I hope mine is drinkable.
I am on another couple of forums and you always get the grammar
police on them. It really must be difficult to be sooo perfect.

Oh lord it hard to be humble when your perfect in every way, I cant wait to look in the mirror cause I get better looking each day!

Errors of judgement, certainly. Although I did have to concentrate pretty hard on a couple of words (demeanour and pretentiousness IIRC) I don't think there were any spelling mistakes.

Let it drop now though, please.

Anyway, it's part of my job to notice and correct them, and I can't turn that off.
