I have a spare freezer with room enough for a fermenting vessel. Is there any reason I shouldn't use it with Inkbird + heating element to control the fermenting temperature, or do I need to use a fridge?
Great idea, sounds good to me! Isn't it just a better big insulated box than a fridge? Maybe you will need to vent the blow off tube outside? Otherwise it might pressurize the freezer? Are you going to remove the motor etc as this may give you a hole to get the blow off pipe in? Not sure how you would safely get rid of refrigerant though? Should be good as it will also be sanitary and food quality.
Loads of folk doing it apparently. http://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=373850 Let us know how you get on!
I have heard that freezers don't take as well to the frequent switching on and off as well as a fridge does. If it's an old one then no harm in using it and see what happens.
