I'm sure I'm probably panicking unduly, but I had a quick look at my oatmeal stout that I racked into secondary on Saturday, and a small area of a "film" has appeared on top of the beer, accompanied by a very small cluster of bubbles (they are smallish bubbles probably less than 1/2 mm in diameter)...

The film looks like a broken up oil spill (BP would be proud  ) that covers I'd say a third of the top of the beer. It smells OK and I haven't tasted it yet. Does this sound like a wild yeast infection? And should I look to rack it off and temp drop asap, ready for bottling?

I'm going to be sooo PO'd if my first AG brew is ruined! :x

I'll try and get a pic tonight.

i had this on my first Oatmeal stout. I think it is likely to be fats from the oatmeal. It did no harm to mine.

However I had a bitter a few weeks latter which did a similar thing but that was because it was infected by fruit flies and it turned to Vinegar   .

I would have thought it was oil from the oatmeal though.

I had this with my last stout (which wasn't oatmeal), there was no problem with it - came out really well. I put it down to the brew being black and therefore easy to see.

I racked mine to secondary last night :D Looks and smells the biz!

Thanks chaps! I had thought it might be something like that, but though it prudent to check! I'll chill out now and look fwd to when it matures :)
