So my daughter has returned from uni in Aberdeen with a bit of a taste for beer. Out of the kindness of my heart I've offered to let her help with the next batch and even gave her the choice of recipe.

So tomorrow we are brewing Brewdog 5AM Saint, out of all the recipes I had at my disposal she has chosen this one.

Hopefully it will be a quick turn around in the brew fridge and I can get to brewing the milk stout that I should have been doing.

That's a fantastic idea.I've told all my children that whenever it's time and they want to learn how to Brew that I would be glad to show them.👍👍

My daughter will be joining me for her third brewday on Saturday... she's 20 months old! :P
Her current designated job title is 'Hop monkey' - she measures out the hops into pots ready to go into the boil, then (with a bit of assistance) she makes the additions!

Start 'em young I say!

Ah but she is a typical ex student.

Left me to clean and sanitise, boil the water in the HLT and then when all the fun starts turns up.

Started of with as usual a little hiccup trying to pump the wort around the HERMS but a couple of minutes later it's flowing fine and the mash is currently sitting at 62 and will be for the next 75 mins.

Time now to get her to measure out the hops and earn her board.

it's now in the fridge and yeast is pitched.

Recipe was for 20 litres and ended up with 19 in the. need to sort out the filtration to the pumps as they are constantly getting clogged up.

OG into the fermentation bucket was 1.058, higher than it should have been. I did think about adding a bit of boiled water to bring it down to the 1.050 that Brewdog have as their target OG i'll just stick with the 19 litres.

FG should be around 1.012 which comes out at 5.7%.

Time to sit and wait for it to ferment.

The daughter bought me a mystery box from Brewdog and currently drinking a bottle of Jet Black Heart to toast another successful brewday.

Interesting choice. Love that beer, more so on tap:thumb:

Brewed 5AM Saint on Sunday too. Following the same recipe from DIY dog I over sparged slightly and how have just over 23 litres in the FV at 1.048. If I had kept it to the 20 litres yeild I think I would have overshot on the target gravity too.

Looking forward to drinking, smells great in the FV and I love the original.

I used one of the DIY dog kits but added the yeast as specified in the recipe and not the US-05 that came with it.

Only 19L into the FV but hell did it go off like the clappers, first time I've had a blowout. Still bubbling away merrily and now on day 5 since brewing.

Have you taken another gravity reading yet? Did mine last night (8 days after it went in the fermenter) and I am at 1.004 which is lower than I was expecting it to be.

Not sure whether my hydrometer is off. I have tested it before with tap water and it was a point or two under 1.000 but I put that down to it being unpurified, probably not exactly 20c and a margin of error.

I'm feeling old again!

Our youngest, had her 50th birthday yesterday (Valentine's Day) ... :thumb:

... and I can't think of a single occasion when she deigned to help her old man with a brew! :nono:

I got bough one of the Punk kits. Was thinking to do the same and use the Wyeast 1056 as recipe says. Definitely will now.

Also noted that the 20L 5am Saint and Jack hammer kits are £5 off at the mo at brewuk.co.uk at £30. 👍

I used one of the kits, it didn't come out quite like the 5AM Saint with nowhere near the hop aroma but still drinkable.
