Just wondering if any of you have tried Windows 8 yet?

I am testing it on a new (to me) pc and I am still not sure what to make of it, clearly (in my opinion) aimed at touch screen tablet users, I cant comment on the speed as this machine is running a 120gb SSD so it seems lightening fast to me...

I'm normally one of the first to get a new OS when it's available as I'm geeky and curious that way. Win8 hasn't even been on my radar after seeing the preview. I got the email to test months ago, may even be a year now, but didn't even bother downloading it.

As you say, it's primarily aimed at touch screen users from what I can see. It just seems like a more involved version of media centre. If I installed it onto any of my systems I doubt I'd bother with the tile menu and would just end up sticking with the regular desktop. Because of this I'm as well sticking with Win7. For me 7 is a great OS, very happy with it. Has all the qualities of XP with the slickness and visuals of vista... with very little drawbacks.

I've seen it in use, and it seems pretty cool. It's pretty sweet to have a customizable easy to use interface, cleaning desktop is always a nightmare so having a shell on a shell, sort of thing, is quite welcome to me because it's a great way to simplify waht you do on your computer :thumb:

i agree with win7 though, it's really been a godsend after vista was such a letdown. it's amazing to just plug stuff in and watch it run with a click or two.

Sticking with 7.Haven't got a tablet or a touch screen,so can't see any major benefits of upgrading (well not until the first service pack rolls out & all the teething problems are sorted)

Playing around with a new OS is great but unless you really need a new feature the standard industry practise with Microsoft is to wait for the first service pack before migrating fully.
PCs these days are so fast and have virtualisation features built in to the CPU that it is entirely feasible to run a virtual PC (VM) within the main OS with very little noticeable performance difference which is great for testing purposes.

+1 for win7. It has been faultless for me over the past few years. I don't think I have had a single blue screen.

Windows 7 is a great OS, only playing with 8 for a bit of fun although the more I use it the more I am liking it, there are some frustrations but I am getting there. Need to sort out my PC's, got 2 running XP, 1 running 7, 1 running 8, 1 thats playing up running linux mint & 2 that need fixing...

Touch screen interface on a Desktop PC - see Ubuntu Unity and the LOSS of users that caused them. Nuff said.

Vista was where M$ lost my support, when I couldn't get my year only printer & scanner to function, it wouldn't see the network on switch on etc, I just pulled the plug and move to Linux first Ubuntu then Mint for past 4+ years, not really looked back. I have xp in a VM if I need to use it and a dedicated XP machine that is only powered up to do firmware updates on phones/dongles etc that need an M$ OS to work.

I don't think I will ever pay for an OS again, and as to the never ending need for new hardware for each new OS from M$ don't miss that either.

(This is written on my freecycled pc that I have running the latest Mint on, I got it 2+ years ago as the previous user said it was "too slow" - its an Intel core duo 6300  )
:drink:

I used to use Ubuntu and have recently changed over to Mint (got curious when I saw the link in your sig) not really had chance to play with it properly yet though (although I have already installed brewing software  )

Windows 8 is an almighty pile of suckage, the enterprise edition doubly so. I am not looking forward to having to deploy it out in my environment. Windows 7 may stay in place for a long while methinks...
