Hi looking for some advice on family tree/Genealogy. I have seen the free trials on many sites but wonder if it is better to use software family tree programmes that you buy instead on the online monthly subscription types? If I opted for the online type and decided to stop the subscription do you loose access to all your previously searched info they have stored as your family tree? or do you still sign in to your account and see it as still visible and printable? It certainly seems a minefield out there and £14 a month can soon mount up on a online subscription if kept ongoing. Any advice welcome
Pete

I've used the non-subscription version of ancestry.co.uk for a while and the only thing that is restricted is the access to various records databases. Census data is free. I have managed to get quite an extensive tree, even with this limited access. My plan was always to buy a membership at some point when I had 6 months I could commit to it, when I retire maybe.

Both the app an online versions are quite easy to use.

I don't know what happens to any data you obtain if you end your membership, but I would suggest saving offline copies of birth certificates etc.

Yes, its a minefield.

Hi Chaps thanks for the answers, when you say you have been using Ancestry.co for a while I thought you only got a free trial for 2 weeks or so and then they bill you as they require your bank details etc. If that is not so how do I get it for a longer period without subscribing with bank details many thanks

I've never given bank details and have been using it for a few years, on and off. Maybe they've changed it.
