false bottoms.

Got a thermo pot, putting in a bottom drain, that part is sorted. What im wanting to know is what have you guys used for a false bottom, need a 440mm diameter bottom. Seen a few examples on here but just wondering what options there are.

Hi,

Can't speak from a huge amount of experience but I have a 70 litre thermopot, used it for the first time on Saturday using one of these.

It's a lot smaller than the diameter of the pot but I'm not sure if it makes a huge difference- the SG of the wort was fine.

I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for, so I will be ordering a ready made cut to size false bottom myself when the time comes. DIY is no problem but sometimes to get the finish / standard without too much hassle its sometimes just worth just getting it done by the pros, means more time brewing and drinking it. :drink:

Some stainless steel mesh works well, if you can find some. Use 2 sheets with some 8-10mm copper pipe between. Shape the pipe to fit the MT then join together and flatten. drill and screw through with 1 sheet either side of the pipe, use stainless steel bolts. Finish by edging with some silicone hose.

This is what i came up with, untested yet but cant see there being any problems.

Looks good to me :thumb: What did you edge it with, some of Vossy's hose? If not then whatever it is needs to stand up to some reasonably high temperatures.

Yeah phil, managed to pinch enough from my pump set up, killed my fingers with that mesh though. Was going to use beer line, only cause i have loads of it but wasnt sure if it would stand up to the heat.

I got a false bottom made by Hop & Grain, they edge it with a Valpar Beer Line that is not designed to be used at the temperatures we mash at, consequently the tube shrinks and is only good for one brew.
Thats my experience anyway.
Does anyone one know of a tube that does not shrink and where do we get it from?
