Hi everyone.

Im about to make the leap from kits to extract and was wonderin if anyone had ideas for a decent basic ale recipe to start me off.

As i know nothing about the various flavours and aromas, i thought it might be a good idea to brew 2 small batches, identical apart from the hop variety in order to see directly what sort of flavours each imparts.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers.

welcome to the forum

Rob Walker is your man, he specialises ( or so he calls it :D ) in smaller brews, usually of shall we say intriguing combinations of ingredients...
he will be around soon no doubt.

If I was you I'd just use light malt extract and what ever type of hops you use depends what beers you like , do you want heavy bitter or lightly hop/aroma etc and then there's yeast which yeast for what stlyes .
I would work a recipe but on phone not pc

So about 1.5kg of light malt extract syrup should do about 20 pints, right?

Then just pick my hops variety? Thats pretty simple, but would it be any good?

I do like a good strong hoppy flavour and aroma, any sugestions where to start?

here you go , for extract recipes they are very easy , if you want darker beer use darker malt , if you want to get the most out of extract then choose liquid yeast , dried will be good but liquid is great . Youi may wish to change the hops but this is just to get you in the right direction .

3kg seems like quite a lot for DME, do you think it could be LME ( 2 cans ) maybe someone with beer smith could feed this in and se if it comes out at 4.7 %
Really like te idea of this simpe single malt single hop recipe my self tho.

You definitely want to check out Nelson Sauvin, Cascade, Galaxy, East Kent Goldings are the original IPA hop and make a smashing (no pun intended) single hop beer, Pacific Gem are awesome and Bramling Cross have a unique blackcurrant taste.

Whatever you do, throw plenty of aroma hops in. Make sure to calculate your recipes accurately, including all of the volumes, hop quantities etc. At small volumes, it makes a massive difference.

US-05 is a great yeast to check out hop taste too. I would suggest one batch with a single hop of any of the IPA hops and US-05, and one batch using East Kent Goldings and S-04.

Never underestimate a simple beer, they are often the best

also, pittsy's recipes is for a full size batch remember! grab yourself a recipe calculator and go from scratch. get everything bang on, it's important. i think you'll be looking at about 1.5kg of LME for a half size batch like you say. My full sizers usually use 3kg DME :thumb:

Here's a basic recipe to get you started...

Code:
Recipe Specifications
--------------------------
Batch Size: 11.50 L
Boil Size: 13.16 L
Estimated OG: 1.044 SG
Estimated Color: 7.2 SRM
Estimated IBU: 50.4 IBU
Brewhouse Efficiency: 75.0 %
Boil Time: 60 Minutes

Ingredients:
------------
Amount Item Type % or IBU
1.70 kg Pale Liquid Extract (8.0 SRM) Extract 100.0 %
20.00 gm Cascade [8.20%] (60 min) Hops 32.7 IBU
30.00 gm Cascade [8.20%] (10 min) Hops 17.8 IBU

That'll be hoppy as crap, uses a full tin of LME and comes out at around 4.3% :thumb:
